Yea, because Adelman has made the Rockets players so much more multidimensional. They are now able to struggle on both offense and defense as opposed to just offense under JVG.
The jury is still out on Adelman and time may prove that he is as much of a failure as JVG. But at least he deserves that chance, right? DD
What have Francis and Brooks done so far for the Rox this year? Play in five games or so? You know JVG would be getting roasted for killing Stevie's confidence and for not playing Brooks, yet you havent said a thing about Adelman doing both so far. People criticize JVG for having Alston, Battier, and Hayes start. They scream about him not giving Snyder a chance and playing Luther at the point. Yet one year later, Adelman is starting Alston, Battier and Hayes. Snyder gets nothing but garbage time, and Heads minutes come mainly at the point. So basically Adelman is doing what JVG did, but with much worse results.
I agree. I hope Adelman turns this thing around and I will be glad to look like a fool for doubting him and his offense. That being said, I dont get why so many people still bash JVG and call his time here a total failure. He inherited a team that hadnt been in the playoffs in awhile, and made the playoffs in three of four years. Yes, the two seven game series losses hurt, but I hardly think the coach who took over an old, cap strapped team, that drafted an unknown 7'6 Asian guy who many predicted would be a flop, and turned them into a 52 win team. That is not a failure. Failure would be never developing Yao's game in the post and consistently being a lottery team.
The team barely missed the playoffs the year before JVG came. Rudy T was out the end of the year because of cancer and Yao was just a rookie getting adjusted to the NBA.
The Western Conference was EXTREMELY competitive top to bottom the entire time JVG was here.. Yao's rookie year, not AS competitive.
I agree. No matter what, JVG produced results. And its not merely the win-loss count, the team was much more fluid and had more continuity than the Rockets this season. You knew what you would get from the Rockets last season. This season not so much. The team right now is inconsistent as a motherf*****
Bonzi had to be back because no team would want him last summer and JVG did want Bonzi played the playoff. it's bonzi quit on the team last year but not JVG gave up Bonzi.
It was time to go in another direction when Les let JVG go but Adelman made a mistake by not retaining Tom Thibs, Boston is glad to have him. Thibs could have been the guy to make the transition smoother for Adelman, unfortunately the NBA boys club didn't allow that.
Uh, none. Seriously, WTF is up with you people? Everyone around here just wants to take sides and launch away now. I actually campaigned for JVG to leave. He had his run. Only problem is, Rick is actually worse. He can't even overcome the basic deficiencies in the team that JVG managed to cover. I'm really starting to think we took a step back and not forward. I'd love for Rick to prove me wrong and get things turned around, but from the beginning of the season 'til now, we've only looked progressively worse...
Did JVG talk about how much of a mistake it was to trade Rudy Gay away? If not, how come he never talks about that?
I honestly believe the problem right now is that we have too many JVG players for a RA team. It is time to either make a big splash in the roster or personnel. Whatever the change it needs to be done now and not tomorrow. Is kidd or bibby available?
There are 3 major types of coaches in the NBA. The great ones, the decent ones, and everyone else. The great coaches: Phil Jackson, Gregg Poppovich, Larry Brown These coaches have teams that always exceed expectations, no matter the talent. If they have a team with good talent, they are a threat to win the Championship. Their teams are usually very disciplined, and less prone to self-implode (a huge problem with every other team in the NBA). When Phil Jackson had the Lakers during the Shaq/Kobe era, he always got them to the Finals and won 3 Championships. The coach before him couldn't do it. Currently, the Lakers are a team that's worse than their record. Their best player is Kobe, who tried sabotaging team chemistry again this summer, Odom who's always injured, and Bynum who has developed mightily well under Jackson. Not only does that shell of a team make the playoffs, but they almost upset the Suns 2 seasons ago with Kwame Brown and Smush Parker as starters. Now, Poppovich runs an excellent organization in the Spurs. He basically has 1 great player, and 2 good players. And he's turned that into a dynasty, and makes sure positive team chemistry flows through that entire team. He's gotten great stuff out of Parker, Manu, and Bowen. As for Larry Brown, as much as everyone hates him for what he did to New York, you can't deny his positive effect on teams. Until the Knicks, every team he's worked with has gotten a better record. With the 76ers, to took the Finals, and he won a Championship with the Pistons (along with another Finals appearance). Flip Saunders, with a similar line-ups, and last year a better one, still can't get them past the Eastern Conference Finals. That's the difference Larry Brown makes. Good coaches: Jeff Van Gundy, Rick Adelman, Flip Saunders, Jerry Sloan All good coaches that have lots of NBA experience. They usually meet expectations with their team, and hold onto their jobs for awhile. But unlike the coaches above, they won't instill Championship confidence. With a Phil Jackson coached team, you know that the team is going to exceed expectations (imagine what he could do with the Rockets). With these guys, you know your team is in decent hands, but a Championship is very wishful thinking.
The "JVG players" are the only reason why the Rockets have not sucked more than they have. Battier, Rafer, Yao, Hayes are playing their heart out and not getting enough help. The "new guys"-- Bonzi, Steve, Mike-- have been the problems.
To add to what Carl said... Great coaches take the components they have and build a strategy to maximize that talent. Their job isn't GM, its to find a way to win with the assets available. Riley has competed with fastbreaking teams, defensive slug it out teams, and hybrids. Instead of putting anything on JVG, put it on Adelman. Where it belongs.
Because the Rockets were picking Gay after the deal was already in place. If they were going to use the 8th pick and keep it they were going to take Sefalosa. This is common knowledge to everybody except all the Rockets fans on Rudy Gay's nuts.
Has anyone ever asked the Rockets what in the holy hell they ever saw in Sefolosha? The guy is the epitome of a scrub. Must have had an unbelievable workout.
Haha...dunno man. Seems like every draft of the CD administration was either hit or miss...and no inbetween
None of this takes away from the fact that it was a mistake anyway you want to look at it. I'm still wondering why he and others like you won't admit that.
