Hey guys I installed Vista on my new Toshiba Laptop and transferred all my media data from my old laptop to my new one. The problem is some videos from my old laptop won't play on my new computer in WMP. Almost all of these are AVI files. Does anyone know whats up with this or how I can fix it?

Did you install all of the Toshiba drivers that are specific to Vista? If not, go to the Toshiba website and find the available downloads for your machine.

I had problems with avi files when I got a vista computer also. I ended up downloading an avi package and that solved the issue. I don't know if that's the best way to do it but that's what I did. :)

When you upgrade to Vista, you're also upgrading your Windows Media Player, with some encoders missing from your previous installation.

    * can you hear the audio only, the video only, or none at all?
    * can you play the file inside Windows Media Player?

If you answered yes, then you might just need some decoders. See what type of file it is while it starts playing... if you right-click it on the folder before you open it, it might tell you. I bet it's DIVx that's missing... it's usually what most encoders are using now. Get the DivX decoder only at www . divx . com.

Have you install codecs like Divx? A lot of videos these days are formatted with Divx and run under the AVI container.
