How's that consolation for anyone but the assistant?

Had this been Kubiak doing this, the BBS would be in chaos over it.

It probably gives all the assistant coaches a better shot at keeping a job in Atlanta.

Yeah but if Casserly or Capers had left early.... :D

Any talk about Petrino abandoning the Falcons loses all relevance when you realize that they are 3-10. They are playing for draft position at this point. Petrino going to Arkansas might have given Atlanta a better shot at Darren McFadden or Brennan or whoever. (Hell, put D-Mac at QB. He'd be better than Vick.) Atlanta even gets a jump start on finding a new coach.

Congrats to Arkansas. Petrino is a good one.

Coaching contracts are ridiculous at this point. All they basically do is tie the team up into money and make the fans "think" they have a coach under contract.

If I were a player I'd be irritated big time about this. Why is ok that coaches can jump ship anytime they want but players are bound by their contracts? Or in college their commitments?

Just because they're 3-10, that doesn't mean he didn't abandon them. This was a guy they brought in to be their Head Coach, to be the leader of their franchise, and he leaves w/o finishing his first season? On top of that, you don't even speak to the players and have a 1 minute meeting w/ your coaches? Come on now.

I understand wanting to leave and taking a position you're more comfortable with, but couldn't you at least wait until the season finished? You're leaving your entire team (players, coaching staff, owner, etc...) high and dry.

I have little to zero respect for guys like Saban, Franchione, and now Petrino.

In three weeks the opening at Arkansas would no longer have been available. Arkansas was fully prepared to offer the job to Will Muschamp. Arkansas made their pitch to Petrino and he turned them down. Arkansas set their sights to Muschamp, who really wanted the job. Petrino has a change of heart, wants back in college. Wants in the SEC. All that.

Would any of you feel differently about this if he had been fired? What's the difference? Atlanta sucks. Would you want to work in that environment? Sure, he signed up for it, but that was without the knowledge he'd be losing his best player to a felony.

And hell, did any of you hear the player interviews? Why are they so upset over him quitting? They all evidently hated him. Right, D Hall? You don't want to lose coaches, don't pretend you've got the intelligence to be one. Don't yell at your coaches on the sidelines. Don't want to lose your coaches? show some respect.

That's fine that he wanted the job at Arkansas, and he could have been hired by Frank Broyles and company today - yet still finish the season with the Falcons. Is Petrino that scared or sensitive of his players not liking him that he couldn't stay for the last 3 weeks of the season? I think that is what making people think this guy is an ass - the 1 minute meeting with his assistants, not even addressing his players about his decision, and not waiting until the season is over to leave. I do think he could have handled his departure a little better. It reminds me of someone who leaves for their lunch break and never comes back to their job. It is just the right thing to do and the classy thing to do to give your employer a 2 week's notice or in his case, to finish out the regular season. Doing it the way he did makes him look like a little biotch.

Petrino is really getting pummeled in the press today. I didn't pay much attention to him until now. He sounds like a real snake. coachfran.com was my #1 football coaching jerk but Petrino now takes his place. Maybe he and Ar-Kansas deserve each other.

I'm sure the divorce in 1-3 years will be amicable.

I'm wondering if anyone here understands the importance of recruiting when it comes to college football. The NCAA recruiting contact period runs through December 16th then a massive dead period until January 12th, I believe. So, let's pretend you're Bobby Petrino. You know you want out of Atlanta. You know you want to go to Arkansas. Houston Nutt has put together a decent class, but who knows if they're you're type of players and if they even want to play for you. This early, you still have a chance to evaluate. You have a chance to maybe even change some guys' minds.

You can't recruit for Arkansas and be the head coach of Atlanta. Sure, they could announce him. He could say he was stepping down. But there would still be no contact between him and potential players until mid January (3 weeks before signing day).

Why sabotage your potential for a successful start at Arkansas? EVERYONE knows Atlanta's season is over. Petrino not being there isn't going to change a thing.

The quote regarding his comments to his coaches, I'm not going to put much emphasis on that. Why? Isn't it entirely possible that he talked to those guys for 5 minutes and the coach who was quoted simply summarized what was said? We'll see how offensive his actions really were by how many of those assistants he brings with him to Arkansas.

I'm not saying the guy is a saint. But good lord, this is football. People are acting as if he just let down a church full of orphans. He did what he thought was best for his family and his career. Lets not forget he's forgoing TONS of money to coach at Arkansas. In this day and age, is it not refreshing to see someone turn down the money to follow his heart?

It will be interesting to see who Michigan turns to for their coach. Petrino reportedly sniffed around Michigan job also. I hear Michigan commitments are starting to look at other schools.

Did anyone catch Sean Salisbury just blast the **** out of Petrino on Sportscenter? He basically told Arkansas recruits that they will be ****ed over and any NFL GM that ever hires Petrino again should be fired immediately.

I find it utterly laughable that you see these interviews with all the Falcons players (Dunn, Hall, etc) who sit there and say hoiw Petrino let the team down and was selfish....blah blah blah.......and in the same breath they say how they stand by their boy, Mike Vick...who apparently wasnt letting anyone down and not being selfish when he was killing dogs.

Petrino is a guy who always thinks the grass is greener on the other side. Arkansas will be looking for a new coach in less than 2 years. Every school is a stepping stone in Petrino's eyes.

So he basically jumped ship to get 5 days of recruiting?

I don't know about this. After the thrashing he has taken by just about everybody, I don't know of too many schools that would take him on unless he just had an outstanding year or two with Arkansas, especially during a rebuilding period.

Hmmm....maybe it would be more "refreshing" if he talked to his players in person about leaving, rather than leaving a lame ass note. Maybe it would be more "refreshing" if he actually consulted players when they were going to be benched, rather than them finding out from the media. Perhaps it would've been even more "refreshing" if he didn't treat his players like 5 year olds, restricting loud talking during dinner and rarely acknowledging his players in the locker room. Check out the cnnsi articles, the espn article, and all you see is that he's a douchebag always looking to leave, but cowardly and snake-like in how he does it. Hell, he told Blank hours before the game Monday night that he was still the coach of the present and the future....

I think that Petrino is classless too.
Its fine that he want to take the Arkansas job, but you must finish the season, only 3 more weeks.

And not telling the players that he is leaving, the players hear that from somebody else, thats very selfish.

He knew (at least one week before) that his last game with Atlanta was the Monday Night game, and he didnt tell anybody that.
