First, I was one of the guys that did back flips when we traded Juwan for Mike James. I was also one of the guys that was bitter than we were paying an average PF (at best) the money Howard was making while he was here. I never thought he was a bad player but the money was just too steep for the type of player he was.

With that said, Juwan took a leadership role with this team and seemed to do a damn good job. He was the only guy after Sura went down that would stick up for team mates, he lost his starting job but busted his rear and made himself very valuable in Yao's absence and he seemed to mentor and motivate everyone else on the team. I found myself wondering today if this team would have a few more Ws if that trade had never gone down.

Just something to ponder as I think about how I never expected this season to turn into such a nightmare.

I was thinking about the same thing. We miss his leadership out there. We lost the only 2 leaders we had, JVG and JH. :(

Shaq is a leader, Duncan is a leader David Robinson was a leader, Moses Malone, Kareem, Jerry West, Olajuwon, Magic MJ Bird to name a few were leaders.

Juwan Howard aint no freaking leader. What the heck is wrong with people on this forum? What the heck has he ever done besides rob teams of contract money?

it has been stated by numerous rockets including yao and tmac that juwan was the vocal leader/team captain of the rockets during his tenure here.

yeah, maybe we could use his leadership, but we couldnt use his non rebounding and non defense skills. we already dont rebound or defend well

But would he have been a more effective player than James has been? At this point we could argue that by addition through subtraction Juwan would have been a more effective player than James.

I thought it was worth mentioning as I have not seen it brought up anywhere else. Juwan definitely brought some elements that his team is missing.

it's a good point you made, but he's on dallas. we wont trade for him, so it really doesnt matter...

If I had to choose between Mike Harris and Ju. Howard, i'd much rather have Harris.

Actually, so would I. I thought Harris could actually contribute to this team as soon as now if not later on.

I'm not really advocating bringing Juwan back. I know that ship has sailed just like we can't bring back JVG. I am, however, marveling in the irony that the first guy I wanted gone for the last 2-3 seasons is the guy who may have turned into this team's locker room MVP if he could have continued to be a leader on a team that sorely needs one now.
