So, with all the different variations of this Texas staple, how do you like your Frito Pie? Served in the bag or in a bowl? Baked in a casserole or served with hot chili poured over fritos and cheese? Do you add anything strange into it? Do you go out to eat it or just make it at home? As for me, I like my Frito pie with Wolf-brand chili poured right on top of Fritos and shredded cheese, typically topped with sour cream and onions, if I have any. Every now and again, I'll also top it with jalepenos. So, how do you like your Frito Pie?
The best frito pie I've ever had is served at Sonny Bryan's BBQ in Dallas. Instead of chili, it's made with brisket, beans, chives, cheese and sour cream. The one downtown only sold it on Thursdays and the place was always packed.
I'd rather have rice with my chili. Even so, it needs to be home-made Chili, and put it together right before eating to keep the Fritos from getting soggy.
Here in Vegas, the best frito pie is found at (gulp) Jason's Deli. I like mine in a bowl with the fritos on the bottom, chili on top of the fritos and moderate amounts of cheddar cheese sprinkled on top. No onions please.
My mom started a new tradition about 7 years ago. We have Frito Pie for Christmas Eve dinner. No onions though, i don't think there is place for those in chili.
I made it a month ago with Wick Fowlers chili. It wasn't the same. Wolf Brand chili might be crappy, but to me, it tastes the best when I make Frito Pie. Of course, JCI makes a damn fine Frito Pie when I order out.
yum I've never had it with jalapenos but why oh why did you kill it with the onions? Onions ruin everything.
I assume you don't like onions in general? I think they taste great with a Frito Pie. Here, maybe this picture is better to you.
Mom used to bake Frito Pie in a big ol' casserole dish. No onions, chili with NO BEANS. The Fritos would bake extra crunchy, the cheese was melted across the top to perfection. So good.... Thanks a lot, Fatty. Now I've got to go to the store and get some fixin's for Frito Pie tonight.
I'm with Fatty on this one. Wolf Brand Chili and cheese and chopped onions on a bowl of Fritos. My two favorite Frito Pies when I eat out is JCI and Sonic. Never tried it with jalapenos or sour cream. Sounds pretty tasty. Sonic has a great one and it is cheap, though small.
Canned Wolf brand chili is just fine for a quick Frito Pie, but if you make some homemade chili then it comes out 10x better. Pick a recipe with no beans though.
I have to agree with you on this one, Fatty. On the fly, Fritos topped with Wolf Brand Chili, shredded cheddar cheese, onions, pickled (Trappey's) jalapenos, and a dollop of sour cream. When I desire a more "gourmet" Frito pie, I head out to Ruby's BBQ in Austin and get their world-famous chili. This makes Frito Pie Deluxe!
Just had a crazy idea... Avocados? I could see it working. Was headed to Walmart (sigh) for some random items. Def gonna pick up some Fritos and chili now. Good call Fatty
