Why does women all like to buy things, I mean things that are pretty useless, at least it seems to me. How many pairs of shoes do you need? How many different window curtains does a home need? How many different bedsheet/comforter sets? I mean the list goes on and on?
Because, women are queer. Plain and simple. Anything over 10 to 15 pairs shoes is insane. Anybody who can watch Lifetime for more than 3 minutes...it's gotta be something going on up stairs.
I would say you are being sexist and over-generalizing, but empirical evidence, from marketing to copious direct evidence, says you are on to something. So... if in general, women enjoying purchasing things more than men enjoy purchasing things... is it nurture (social forces) or nature (genetic, chemical, etc)? I vote that it is not completely a social construct. I think there is something related to nest building. This is why I am not a biologist though.
I have no idea why, but my wife keep wanting to buy things that are on sale, I keep telling her that 50% off is good, but if you don't buy, it is 100% off!!! She jsut won't listen to me.
I like a good deal just like the next hoe, but c'mon...Do you really need more perfume or more shoes...oh wait...
There's a reason that most department stores have the entire first floor devoted to women's clothes and one section of the top floor devoted to men's clothes. Of course, men like to buy things, too, it's just that, instead of buying a bunch of little unnecessary crap, we buy just a few items of really big unnecessary crap like cars, boats, and $1500 tool chests. Heck, I just got a $900 LCD TV that I didn't need...well, I'm sure tinman would disagree with me on that. Oh, and ladies, I don't care what name it has on it, NOBODY needs a $300 purse. I would slap divorce papers on my wife in a second if she bought a $300 purse. That mother******er better have a goldplated zipper and be studded with sapphires for that kind of money...
(not amused.) my bf and i were just discussing this yesterday. society's materialistic superficial ways dictate our need to buy things: women are expected to look good at all times, so if we have to buy 15 pairs of shoes to match the latest hottest outfits (that we also have to buy, by the way) then so be it. everyone has to have the biggest baddest newest prettiest shiniest things, and they must have it NOW. We're just playing into the roles that society gave us. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
I love the women that have to spend money to save money.. "But, this towel rack was on sale for 85% off.. I had no choice but to buy it!" I'm glad mine values a dollar..
The best way to explain it is shopping is a sport for women. It is how they compete and establish status with other women.
In other words: Women are very wrapped up in what people think about their appearances and men don't give a damn (generalizing). To me, a woman who is a shopaholic is a strong warning sign that she's very insecure in herself.
So you're saying that women are inferior, helpless creatures that merely react to male expectations and dominance of society? Of course, it's difficult to establish a correlation there when historically speaking men have thoroughly dominated the 'affairs of man', and systematically relegated women to second class citizens. It's less so today, but I can't help but wonder if 'subconsciously' (if not systematically) that's still being reflected in our daily behavior. I mean, it's not uncommon for both males and females to settle for playing to their 'gender stereotypes'. Anyways, sorry for derailing...
I have to force my wife to go shopping. It is me who wants things like a new tv etc. She wants nothing.
