Uh, that was the NFL. College coaches rarely succeed in the NFL. Not to mention you apparently just blamed the Oiler collapse entirely on Jack Pardee.

But I was, and I went to the Super Bowl! --Bill Callahan. In all seriousness, college and the NFL require significantly different skill sets to be good head coaches. You can't cover up deficiencies by being a superb recruiter and simply out-talenting inferior opposition in the NFL. You have to be more scheme based because the talent differential is much closer in the average NFL game than the average college game. On the other hand, you have a lot more time to deal with that in the NFL because you don't have 20 hour a week restrictions on practice time, and you're dealing with grown men who are generally well-versed in the fundamentals. You never have to worry about teaching some raw 18 year old the basics of th egame because he's been able to get by on just his athletic ability until now.
I've seen Jack Pardee at few Coogs football games and he doesn't look too old for 71. He looks like he could still coach. I love Pardee but personally I would go with a young up & coming coach just for the long haul (5yrs).
Am I the only one who thinks this is an awful idea? Isn't Pardee retired and out on a ranch somewhere? Does Klingler have a strong coaching background that merits him being groomed to take over?
It's looks like they are looking for someone who won't jump ship after a couple of mediocre seasons. I guess Pardee and Klingler fit the bill.
One of the reasons the Run and Shoot was so lethal was no one ran it, no one had enough speed to cover it. Half of C-USA runs spread formation 4 and 5 receiver sets. I am not sure Pardee is the Answer at this crucial juncture. I guess best case scenario QB's and Recievers lick their chops to come here and pile up gaudy numbers. I'll be honest, I am not getting any younger and Robertson's seats don't have backs...I am not looking forward to a 5 hour marathon against East Carolina as much as I might have UH vs Arkansas or A&M.
But Pardee has been out of football for 12 years! He wasn't even looking for a job; he just answered the phone. What has Klingler done as a coach. Has he even coached at the college level before?
Which was the defensive coordinator's responsibility... Buddy Ryan... not to mention players on the field. The offense was Pardee's genius... and they put up 28 on offense in the infamous game you seem to not fully remember.
i don't know much about the coaching search, but i do know this. david klingler has absolutely blown my mind with his radio analysis of cougar football. take it for what its worth, but that guy knows what is going on in briles' play calling, somehow, always. i have no doubt he could X and O. can he recruit? can JACK recruit...?
Actually the defensive coordinator that year was Jim Eddy, not Buddy Ryan, but that’s neither here nor there. The fact is that, as the head coach (not just offensive coordinator) of the team, Pardee SHOULD get the blame for that game. As the head coach, his job wasn’t to make sure the offense scored 28 points in the first half, it was to win the game. And to me, it doesn’t matter what level you coach in, Pop Warner or the NFL, if your team blows a 32-point lead in the 2nd half, you don’t deserve to be called a genius. I like Pardee and I like the UH program, but I’m just not sure hiring a 71-year old coach who has been out of football for 12 years is the right move. Yes, Joe Paterno is old too, but he hasn’t been out of football for 12 years.
Bowden and Paterno are not good comparisons. They've been at their schools for like over 3 decades. It's not like they were hired in their 70s. They're legends and even if they were senile you would never know. Schellenberger is a better comparison but UH is not FAU - a program that just started its football program like 3 years ago. FAU brought in a (University of) Miami legend for credibility. I'm surprised UH would go this route over hiring another up and coming coach like Briles.
I think at this point you just have to put your faith in Dave Maggard. He's done well in re-building the program on all levels, and it seems like he knows what he's doing. If this is a step in taking UH football to the next level, then go for it.
