Jerry Sloan just signed an extension for his 21st season. I imagine if Sloan was ill like Rudy, the Jazz would give the job to his assistant until he was well enough to come back. I believe Rudy T is still one of the best coaches in NBA history. its not about the Xs and Os, its about gelling a team and motivating them to the top. As far as loyalty to an organization, Rudy T was there from the very beginning.

Jerry "Jackass" Sloan is a better coach than Rudy T. Thank God Rudy T had Hakeem and Sloan only had Karla.

it's because they love Rudy. they don't want him to be under stress. Rudy has done everything, he already proved a lot about his basketball career. let him enjoy the game by watching, scouting.

One can argue that Jerry's teams execute better than Rudy Ts, but we all know that Rudy Ts teams played with heart that was second to none.

One can only ponder if Rudy T could motivate this team.

i think rudy hindered the rockets in that he let the players (steve and cuttino) run around like playground buddies. he didnt enforce anything and didnt really help the players or team mature.

still love the guy, he just wasnt good with young players.

Rudy would have been the perfect coach for a Yao and Tmac team.

Don't forget that Rudy had to leave the Lakers as well. I love Rudy T just as much as anyone else, but his health was an obvious issue and parting ways was probably the best thing for both sides.

I will still take a healthy Rudy T over any coach. "Never Underestimate the Heart of a Champion."

well steve was terrible under every coach except for Rudy. Maybe that was the correct way of coaching a young steve francis. its about getting the best out of your players right?

I think Rudy is very good with emotional types like Steve, Vernon, and probably Tmac.

Yeah from what i heard him leaving the lakers wasnt really all him in terms of health...i think he got fed up with the team (namely kobe) and all the drama...remember the lakers were 2 games above .500 when rudy left and ended the season 14 games below

Interesting point, except I don't view TMac as very emotional. He is certainly not "firey" like Vernon. But, good observation. Certain temperaments just mesh better.

Rudy catered to the players too much, stark contrast to Sloan who had the my way or the highway attitude. In the end Sloan turned out to be the better coach, even if Rudy has 2 rings and Sloan has none. Consistency is the key and Sloan has always had a consistent winning team, except for the couple of years after the the Malone Stockton era.

Rudy was run out of Houston for lack of progress post Hakeem era and then run out of the Lakers by Kobe. You can say the "official reasons" why he left both jobs but the real reasons have been circulated.

Sloan had slow progress post Malone/Stockton too.

    Lol.

In all seriousness, Rudy's health has taken a downward spiral. Forget the cancer. He had major drinking problems in LA. I don't want the guy taking a stressful job like coaching. JVG at least had hairs to pull out. We all want to see Rudy live long.

I love Rudy T but his health problems are real. I wish the Rox would've given him a second chance but I think by now he would't have cut it.

Also for those who think Rudy was destroying the Francis-Yao Rox remember that team finished one game out of the playoffs that year and Rudy left with about a quarter of the season to go. For a young team featuring a rookie Yao the loss of stability from a mentor like Rudy T was hard to deal with and if Rudy had finished that season its very likely the Rox would've made it to the playoffs as the 8 or 7 seed.

Rudy was a great coach and got the most out of all his players. How many total scrubs looked good under Rudy?

Rudy as a GM was a different story. He fell in love with players too easily like Cato, Moochie and MoTay. If Rudy had someone like Morey as a GM, I think things would have turned out different.

Heart is overrated. Chuck Hayes and Shane Battier play their heart out every game but everyone is still crucifying them right now.
Heart can take one over the hump but without skills and gameplans one cant even get near it.

Heart and hustle are two different things. Please don't confuse the two. Battier has never shown heart.
