This BCS stuff is like a broken record, I couldn't even listen to sports radio this morning because I am so tired of hearing the same crap over and over. Not sure who it was, but an ESPN reporter was quoting one of the presidents of a major conference (I think it was SEC) saying that this season could really get the wheels rolling for a playoff system. What do y'all think?
The poll is pretty confusing. The question is "Will it ever happen?" However, the choices given represent whether one agrees or disagrees with the current system.
I think it has to happen. Schools need to look long and hard at the money. They can make more in a playoff system, especially if they had them at their home fields. I'd bet on an 8-team playoff that'll start whenever the contract with the BCS is up. The bowls will be stay around, but it'll be like the NIT.
Yeah, this seems more like an opinion poll rather then a speculative question. To answer the thread title, I believe it's inevitable. Only more and more programs are going to be upset w/ the system and demand a change. I think it would happen in 5 years, but then I think someone else posted that it couldn't because of contractual agreements or something like that, so I don't know.
Exactly. I don't think it will happen (not in my lifetime), but I don't think it's fine the way it is.
No, it won't happen any time soon. There was a thread on here a while back about the Commissioner of the Big 10 and the power he wields, especially when it comes to the bowl system. The networks and the rest of college football are terrified of this guy. The best bet is a +1 system. Oh, and you should fix the poll as the answers don't go with the question.
Can't edit the poll options, but I didn't want the topic to be "Do you want to see it happen?" because I think we all know what the answer would be.
I wish you had the option in your poll of "Yes, college football needs a playoff but it is not going to happen". I think it is utterly r****ded that this Big 10 Commissioner has this much power.
College football after Thanksgiving is a completely pointless endeavor. I won't see a playoff in my lifetime.
even with a playoff, the teams that make the playoff still have to be determined. how will they do that? using the bcs? but i thought everyone hated the bcs? pretty much, the complaining is never going to stop regardless of the system. any playoff that is realistic in the amount of teams that make it(so 8 teams or less) is going to have the exact same problems in determining the teams that make the playoff that the bcs currently has.
I agree with this opinion. other things: A single-game playoff won't give you the "true" champion either. Upsets will happen and have a greater impact in a field of 8 rather than 64 (playoff series formats reduce the chance that the worse team will advance ... but take much longer). Hawaii finished 12-0 but is still ranked #10 (AP, USA Today, and BCS) and may not make the playoffs (out of the top eight or six). Similar situations will happen with one-loss Boise State not making it in over two-loss Oklahoma (example) and so forth ... grounds for another lawsuit. I recant my previous "NFL Season" argument since people pointed out that D-II and D-III do it. Different bricks, same house, same problems ... some resolved ... and some problems that are different. I view it as more of a side-step than an upgrade. Neither is an end-all-be-all answer. Also, I like the whole "bowl tradition" thing.
I think the point (at least for me) is to make sure you give the top 2 teams a chance at the championship. As scrambled as it is, if you take the top...8 teams let's say...then I feel comfortable that we've got the top 2 teams in that bunch. If you're one of those teams on the cusp of making the top 8, I don't feel that sorry for you if you don't make it. At this point that actually excludes my team, the Florida Gators at #9. I have no problem w/ that.
