This thread is not about tribute bands that simply try to mimic a particular group, but rather tribute albums to great bands by other famous artists. I downloaded Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin and was rather surprised by how much I liked it. 4 Non Blondes does a killer version of Misty Mountain Hop, with Linda Perry doing a damn fine job singing. Here's the track list: 1. "Misty Mountain Hop" (Page/Plant/Jones), by 4 Non Blondes 2. "Hey Hey What Can I Do" (Page/Plant/Jones), by Hootie & the Blowfish 3. "D'yer Mak'er" (Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham), by Sheryl Crow 4. "Dancing Days" (Page/Plant), by Stone Temple Pilots 5. "Tangerine" (Page), by Big Head Todd and the Monsters 6. "Thank You" (Page/Plant), by Duran Duran 7. "Out on the Tiles" (Page/Plant/Bonham), by Blind Melon 8. "Good Times Bad Times" (Page/Jones/Bonham), by Cracker 9. "Custard Pie" (Page/Plant), by Helmet with David Yow (of the Jesus Lizard) 10. "Four Sticks" (Page/Plant), by Rollins Band 11. "Going to California" (Page/Plant), by Never the Bride 12. "Down by the Seaside" (Page/Plant), by Tori Amos with Robert Plant I'd recommend it for any Zep fan who is curious to hear other famous folks paying tribute. Like I said, I'm enjoying this album quite a bit. It left me wondering what else was out there, which lead to this thread and the all-knowing Clutch BBS. Anyone have any recommendations for other tribute albums?

Un-Led-Ed by Dread Zeppelin. I generally hate tribute albums with 15 bands covering 15 different tunes of a given band. Pointless.
With ZZ Top, R.E.M., T-Bone Burnett and many others doing covers of the The 13th Floor Elevators and Roky Erickson, this is one of the great tribute albums. The 13th Floor Elevators were formed in 1965 and broke up in 1968, but while in existence they started psychedelic rock, which is erroneously thought to have been started on the West Coast by groups like The Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service, playing gigs at places like the Avalon Ballroom and the Fillmore in San Francisco. Later, groups like Spirit, Iron Butterfly, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and the Experience and others expanded and continued the genre. I saw all of them multiple times, except for The Doors, who I only got to see once, in Houston. Nope, it was the Elevators who began it, even before The Byrds, right here in Texas. Other Texas groups followed... Bubble Puppy (I partied with them several times at the old Weingarten Mansion, off the bayou by UH. Some friends of mine from high school were also friends of members of the band), Shiva's Headband, Red Krayola, Golden Dawn, and several other groups. I had a girlfriend who's older sister was the girlfriend of Danny Thomas, the Elevators drummer, and I had some interesting times with them. Get it!
I got this the day it came out. I was 17, I think. I also recommend Stoned Immaculate: Tribute to The Doors.
Deckard, [Slightly Off Topic] You mentioned quite a few people and bands, but you didn't mention Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet. You disliked them? [/Slightly Off Topic]
There is a Doug and Son's cut on the Rocky tribute. http://rapidshare.com/files/74012531/08_you_re_gonna_miss_me.mp3.html
No, they were great! I didn't mention some others, as well. I was very sad when I heard Doug passed away. He was a true legend of Texas, who produced a wide range of music. I seem to recall his management wanting him to come off as a British Invasion group as Sir Douglas, and it worked pretty well for a time. Pretty ironic!
I agree. About the only tribute album I enjoy is one that has the same artist singing all the songs - Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes (her tribute album to Leonard Cohen).
I generally do not care for tribute albums, but Novellas rendition of 'Kiss Me on the Bus' is worth the price of admission alone.
