http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2001/1219/1298719.html Cal Ripken who? Unbelieveable. That last time he did not call a game was November 20th 1965. My dad was 14 years old. Hope for the best. Get well, Chick. He is one of the best in the NBA. JBIIRockets
This thread may draw a string of posts about how Chick has gotten old and screws up names, etc. ... but you're right, he's still one of the best. And when he was still in his prime -- like, say his late seventies -- he was the best by so much it's ridiculous. Imagine Wilt among NBA big men in the early '60s with no Bill Russell, and that's the kind of dominance we're talking about. He didn't just know the game -- he knew every player in the league, and their games. A lot of what I've learned about basketball started with Chick Hearn saying "He's a good shooter from right there" as some obscure backup PF caught a pass, followed by "Isn't he, though!" when he nailed the shot. In one of their commercials of great Finals moments, the NBA included a clip of Magic Johnson sinking the "baby sky hook" to beat the Celtics in '80s. If you listened to it (or remember it now), you'd hear Chick Hearn saying, "Just what I thought -- a hook shot in the lane." He'd predicted the play before the Lakers inbounded the ball.
swopa, you make it sound like the man has passed away. Still too early about telling stories about how they used to do it in the old days
I agree with Swopa. I hope he gets well, but the guy is almost senile now sad to say. And if you don't believe all I have to say is "What a move by Kareem-Abdul Jabbar. . .I mean Shaq". Time to call it a career Chick.
Ok Here's my Deion Impression . Chick , You Da man , I love you baby , But you really need to call it quits . I mean you call every player "The Kid" . I like the fact he does games with Stu Jackson , I call them Chicken Stew (Chick and Stu)
