What were the best computer games that came out in 2001? Best Console games? for PC: Far and away, I have to go with Max Payne as the number 1 game of the year -- it had everything it needed, a good story, graphics, gameplay -- it stacks up against the best from any year And after that, I really didn't play anything worth consideration. Black and White was supposed to be good, but I haven't played it yet, and I wasn't a big fan of Ghost Recon.
Max Payne sucked @ss. it was completely built around that single lame 'bullet time' effect which got old real quick. B&W was solid, but it was more one of those games where when you're not playing it you say 'wow, that's really cool technology', but while playing it it's not quite so cool. Operation Flashpoint is far and away the best in my book. Great, realistic, in depth single player and in depth multiplayer makes it great on all fronts. The only problem is the multiplayer requires Gamespy for multi. The other game that stands out to me is Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the online multiplayer side. Tropico was also solid. Oh, and I'll save DaDakota the trouble and say 'Conquest: Frontier Wars'
I played Black and White for a while before it got boring. It was really innovative once you started playing it, but then just seemed to be repetitious and tedious. It's still a pretty good game, though. I hate first person shooters, so I won't comment on Max Payne. Some of my favorites from this year : Arcanum - not to the epic level of a Baldur's Gate-type RPG, but still a good game. Empire Earth - take Age of Empires II and make it 3D, make it bigger, and then make it better. Good game that's every bit as addictive as AoE2. Civilization III - This game gets a lot of good reviews, but I think most of them are simply kissing Sid Meier's butt. I played it and think the game cheats beyond belief. That and it bogs down to hell even on a fast machine when playing on a huge map. It's still a decent game, but doesn't deserve all the accolades it keeps getting. So why did I put it here? I dunno - just needed to b****. Diablo 2 : Lord of Destruction expansion - I just bought this yesterday to mess around with. I'm sure I'm still addicted to Diablo 2, so I'll probably still find this as one of the better games of the year. My favorite of the year, though : Baldurs Gate II : Throne of Bhaal. Quite possibly the best RPG ever. RPG'ing like it should be... massive, great plot, immersive, and FUN!
Europa Universalis II - greatest strategy game ever (though it's more of an expansion pack on EUI, rather than a new game in itself, imo) Civ III - yeah, it cheats, but empire builders that don't are too easy unless you play multiplayer Baldur's Gate III - Throne of Bhaal - Best RPG ever (or at least since Darklands ). Front Office Football: The College Years - if you like the management aspects of the EA games, but think it's not well done, try the Front Office series. You can't control players, but it kicks butt.
Halo on XBox gets my vote. I'm sorry to say but Max Payne did not suck @ss. Maybe you thought it did....but your by and far the minority. Bullet time was a refreshing boost in the arm for FPS games. Anyone who watched "The Matrix" wanted to do that in a video game. Although, the dream sequences in Max Payne sucked with the stupid follow the red line or drop into oblivion challenges. The game could have been better with more work but maybe a sequel will be forthcoming(if there is one). I also think the comic book motif was cheesy. I would rather those scenes played out in live animation. I'm looking forward to Deus Ex 2 and Doom III on XBox next year hopefully.
Any Unreal Tourney fans? I'm pumped for UT2 coming out next year. I finally got around to getting into the 21st century and have a Dell on the way that can handle the latest games. OS
Max Payne was great! The "Bullet-Time" effect was awesome, but that alone didn't make the game. It had a neat story, but the key was how it told the story. The environments were immersive, and the action was non-stop. Bullet-Time only made it better and gave it a unique flavor. I liked Civ III, but found it to be so similar to the first two that it wasn't worth it . . .
Conquest Frontier Wars on the PC for sure !!!! Now for the games I did not make..... Civ 3 was good, Max Payne had a neat hook to it, Kohan was a good game, Black and White was overated, and Diablo 2 was more of the same (but still with **** graphics). My vote for GOTY (Excluding Conquest of course) goes to Grand Theft Auto 3. DaDakota
I just got Max Payne on Xbox. Very cool. I can't stop playing it. Without the story the game would be no fun.
My nod goes to Grand Theft Auto III for PS2. I bought the game after Iron McFist started a thread about it. I've already beaten the game and still play every single day!
Well, I went and bought The College Years and it's as addictive as FOF ever was, but far more complex. It has some stupid quirks in it that produce unrealistic results too often, if ya ask me. But like I said, it's still addictive. I bought the LOD expansion pack for Diablo II. I started all over since I had deleted the folders from when I played the first time (heck, I had deleted the COMPUTER from when I played the first time!). This game is so damn simple, but still so damn fun.
My God you people have too much time on your hands! Do something constructive! Exercise, volunteer, read a book....whatever, just PUT DOWN THE CONTROLLER AND SLOWLY BACK AWAY! Behad, father of three who spend waaaay too much time on their playstations.
I need help... I finished the first part of Max Payne. It's like nine (?) chapters long. I'm supposed to start Part II but I'm stuck in some green tinted maze...WTF!!! I think its supposed to be the home of the Agent friend of Payne's. All I know is I'm stuck. Time to play some Simpsons Road Rage. SRR is a must have for all Simpsons fans. Basically its Crazy Taxi with a Simpsons twist. My favorite lines are from Ralph Wiggum: "Take me to the Box Factory. Boxes!!!! Yayyyyy!!!!" and Professor Frink: "My wife is going to kill me".
smokey, you're in the dream maze inbetween parts of max payne. I think the creators tried to changed the pace of the game by inserting the dreamy atmosphere maze to show flashbacks of the murder scene. but it sucks. it breaks up the pace of the game. just wonder around the maze, soon enough you will find the way out.
