i just read in the chronicle that steve was also on vicodin and alcohol. vicodin is a brand name for hydrocodone - which is a type of narcotic pain reliever.

since both vicodin and alcohol both can slow your reflexes and cause sluggishness, it makes it a moot point if he really was above 0.08 or 0.10 BAC. even if he had only 1 or 2 drinks he could have had some sensory and reflexive impairment that would have made him unfit to drive.

now legally i don't know if he can be held responsible for anything but in the court of public opinion (at least my public opinion) - he'll be convicted of stupidity. not just because he may or may not have been impaired, but because he ignored the warning on his prescription bottle and in all likelihood what his physician must have told him.

i like the guy and don't think this will define his career (or even his season) - but i think it would be nice to hear him come out and admit that taking the risk of combining alcohol with a medicine that should have been avoided was a stupid (if not selfish) and risky thing to do...

Amazing he could pass a field sobriety test with that mixture. It turns most people into tubs of Jello...

    Yes, quite stupid.

I am moving to NYC on January 7th. Is there a place where a group of Rockets fans get together to watch the games?

yes but i've seen lots of patients who at first appeared sober but after a few minutes you realized they truly weren't (haven't heard any details of the field tests and so i'll reserve judgement).

btw- bigboymumu - i just left new york a few months ago and haven't changed the moniker. but no i never did find a good place to watch the rockets. sorry.... and good luck in NYC.

Well so much for that whole "Well he might have just had a couple drinks" argument.

    Painkillers and Booze don't mix...

I remember when I had mono they hooked me up with some hydrocodone, man that stuff is strong...

From working as a pharmacy tech for about 5 years, umm... vicodin and alcohol ain't a good thing. Steve may be lucky he's still alive if he was doing both and then driving. From what I recall, taking alcohol while on vicodin just magnifies the "drowsiness" of the vicodin alone.

I'm sure Steve isn't a bad guy. The hydrocodone is a prescription drug. I got it when I had my wisdom tooth pulled to ease the pain. I'm sure he took it for pain relief. He's injured right? Who cares that he's out late? Its no one's business.

    Hang in there Steve!

I'm surprised that Franchise didn't wrap his car around a telephone pole.

BigBoyMumu...try the ESPNZone in Times Square, but it will be expensive.

I think it all depends on how your body handles it. It doesn't always make you tired or drowsy.

A couple buds and I went to the a car show at the astro arena. They wanted me to drive, but I made them since i had just taken some vicoden. I drove up to their house fine. On the way back home a couple hours later, I just found myself losing concentration of the road ... no so much tired. About 30 seconds from my house, I find myself nearly totaling my car and ripping the backend off someone elses car, totaling theirs.

With a combination of the stupid b**** stopping on an exit ramp, when she has right of way, and wet slick roads, I would not have hit her. I was keeping my eye on the feeder road, watching for traffic, and forgetting about making sure the car in front of me went ahead.

It doesn't matter ... one beer, two beers ... 4 hours after taking a substance or not ... you must be fully alert on the road. All I needed was one second, and I could have swerved and missed her (of course, sliding into oncoming traffic). you need as much awareness as possible while driving.

agreed BUT the point is that steve is no expert on pharmaceuticals and physical reaction to such. with the combination of alcohol, vicodin, and the body's natural time clock (at 5am you slow down even if your body is used to staying awake), he put himself (and other people) at risk. he should have been more careful even if he didn't feel like he was slowing down.

I have seen Steve F. walking around the Compaq Center free of pain. I have also seen him jump up off the bench to congratulate somebody for a good play.

There is no way, in my opinion, that Francis is in any pain that warrants Vicodin. Vicodin, or its generic brother Hydrocodone, is reserved for fairly serious pain management.

To complicate this situation, Vicodin is also VERY habit forming. I sure hope that somebody grabs hold of Francis and shakes him real hard. He is too young and talented (physically and mentally) to get mixed up with alcohol and addictive painkillers.

    exactly.
Drinking codeine cough syrup for "the high" was actually a trend with a lot of rappers here in Houston for a min. Vicodin is a trendy pill to pop in some circles as well. Now i don't know if that was his intention (hopefully not) but i wouldn't rule it out either..

i know this is off-topic, but my friends and I catch games at Blondies, a Sports Bar on 79th and Amsterdam.

Basically any bar with LeaguePass will play it for you if you ask.

but I have to be honest, it hasnt been fun watching these games.

No one takes drinking and driving as seriously as me, as my grandparents were killed by drunk *******. But any lawyer (and I'm sure Steve has a good one) will tell you that you should never take a breathalyzer test. If he passe the field test and didn't take the breath test, then he will probably get off. As would anyone with a lawyer. This isn't just athletes or stars, so don't start the whole "athletes get treated differently" crap.
