I tend to go through phases with music. I just passed out of my rap phase and have recently become interested in old school heavy metal. Mainly 70's and 80's era stuff like Iron Maiden, Dio and old Metallica. What are your favorite old metal bands and/or songs? After listening to Iron Maiden for pretty much the first time, I discovered that I really like nearly all of their songs! It's great discovering new music that you like. Hook me up with some good old metal!

megadeth anthrax slayer motorhead accept judas priest metal church mercyful fate fates warning rainbow armored saint voivod exodus suicidal tendencies kreator celtic frost venom wasp There's so much more. Those were the days....
Let's get a little more specific! Here are a few must-download tracks. Motorhead - Ace of Spades Megadeth - Holy Wars Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized Slayer - Raining Blood Pantera - Domination Judas Priest - Electric Eye Metallica - Damage Inc. If you're really digging Dio (and who doesn't), don't forget to check out his stuff with Black Sabbath. "Heaven and Hell" and "Neon Knights" spring to mind immediately. Dio's a personal fave. If it's Iron Maiden that you're most interested in, well, there are entire genres devoted to copying them, more or less. Check out bands like Dragonforce, HammerFall, 3 Inches of Blood, and even early In Flames. You'll probably like it.
Old School? How about some dinosaurs. Enjoy! Buy Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell- the first one with Ronnie James Dio, the one with the angels smoking the cigarettes. Great songs.
second this The Dio Black Sabbath albums are great. (Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules) Old school Judas Priest is always good (Screaming for Vengeance, British Steel, Defenders of the Faith, Painkiller were all released while at the top of their game) Megadeth is superior to Metallica in every way. (Rust in Peace, Killing is my Business, Peace Sells just for a start) Iron Maiden........well, to anyone that remembers when I was active in music threads knows that they are my favorite metal band EVER...so welcome to their fanclub (Up the Irons!) be sure you go all the way back to the Dianno days (Killers, Iron Maiden) and dont miss a one of the Bruce-era Maiden (Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Seventh Son, Powerslave, Fear of the Dark) Their latest stuff (Brave New World, Dance of Death) is still good, tho not as good as their stuff before Bruce left(and then returned for those two albums...so far). I saw them live on both the last two tours, and they still kick major ass live. Anthrax is most known for their sojourn into metal/rap, but their early stuff was pure metal (Armed and Dangerous, Spreading the Disease, Among the Living) Early Queensryche was exceptional prog-metal (Queensryche EP, The Warning, Operation Mindcrime) Fates Warning is similar but harder than QR, worth checking out if you like Dream Theater and Queensryche style metal. Scorpions has some good stuff early to mid 80s (Blackout, Animal Magnetism) Helloween is a under-appreciated European metal group....similar in style to Maiden....check out Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt 1 to see if you like em. WASP is good campy metal fun....stick with their first couple of albums for a representative sample of their better stuff. fwiw...the earlier mentions of groups like Tesla and Ratt are not really right for this thread...they are both great rock bands....not metal tho. I got more.....but this is a good primer on some of my favorite late 70s to late 80s metal bands

There are only 2 metal bands you need to listen to 1.) Becoming the Archetype 2.) Between the Buried and Me.
Obituary is pretty cool, although they may be considered 90s. Dude those bands are pretty rad!!! If you want to divide up the death metal genre, Becoming the Archetype is melodic with a Scandinavian feel at times, Between The Buried and Me is thrash/progressive/melodic/jazz all at once. Of course, not what you're asking for in the OP. :\
Maybe they got gay and mainstream. City of Evil was good, Waking the Fallen still ****ing amazing. But man they fell off.
