Since I work behind the most repressive firewall in the world and cant get into sites like gamefaqs, I'll have to bother you guys with questions.

    1. Is tehre some secret way to do the beatdown? cuz i seems like they always kill me and send me flying each time whereas when I eat someone down they just crumble to the floor.

There is an occasional glitch where if you swing early you will leap across the screen and abort them (provided you have softented them up with a few shots/damage first). Also some weapons like the Brute shot do much more melee damage.

Did you scream something racist and/or homophobic whilst performing the melee?

If not, then I guess that could be the reason.

The beatdown system in Halo3 can be annoying. I've read that winning a beatdown doesn't depend on who beatdown first (within a certain time frame), but rather who has more health when the beatdowns occur.

Not directly related to a beatdown, but a good tip nevertheless.

Never go into a skirmish if your shield isn't completely full. After I kill someone and they got me pretty good I go "hide" for a few seconds so someone doesn't kill me with one shot. You might feel like you're letting your team down by not getting back in the game as quickly, but in the end your kill/death ratio will be much better which better serves your team.

Also, learn to use the Battle Rifle. The assault rifle is okay for close distances but the BR with shots to the head is lethal and I think the best Halo3 players are great with the BR.

i'll concur that it seems like the biggest difference is amount of shield. if you go into a beatdown with some shield and the other player has little, you are likely to win. it also took me a while to figure out that dual-wielding isn't that important in Halo 3...at least in Halo 2 I would dual-wield a lot more, but in this game I find sometimes it puts me at a big disadvantage.

but, take the above with a grain of salt...i only play a few hours a week and am not that good...i think i'm a level 11 or something...

Also - learn the maps and where the weapons are. I'm really good with the shotgun and the maulers, so I try to get one of those at the beginning of every game. Learn to recognice when a guy has a shotgun and he's running towards you. Don't run to him cause he'll kill you in one shot. it's better to shoot running backwards while he keeps chasing hoping for that one shot close kill.

I'm new to Halo and FPS multiplayer in general (outside of old Goldeneye sessions) but one thing I specifically liked about Halo online is that it's not all sniping and crap, or at least the games I've been playing.

I'm rather good at the beatdown thing though, so I like the close encounters.

for sure. the shotgun rules. when someone else has it, it sucks though.

like i said, i'm not great....my only 10+ killing sprees come with the shotgun.

another thing i notice is, when i come in the middle of the pack, or the end of games, or just always, i regularly live longer than other players...say like 45 seconds+. where there'll be people who dominate at times who seem like the are living on average of 30 seconds or so. So I guess they are just going into big fights, or something, killing 2 or 3 people, getting shot, and then repeating. this is just on regular slayer games.
