Holy crap, as of right now, the Patriots have the #2 pick in the NFL draft. Can anything go wrong for these guys?!

I think Asante Samuel is a free agent next year (I think they franchised him this year)

Also, the Pats have been known to not overpay players, so I could see them trading this pick for additional picks

If they were to keep the pick, I wonder who they would take...
    1) Don't really need McFadden with Maroney
    2) Could add Desean Jackson I guess but their receiving corps is obviously not a weakness
    3) Maybe Glenn Dorsey
    4) Maybe Jake Long

The Patriots traded their first round pick last year to the 49ers for a fourth rounder and this year's first rounder.

A trade. When the trade was made, nobody (including the 49ers themselves), expected the 49ers to be 2-8 and tied for the 2nd worst record in the NFL.

Did we really need another thread for this since this same subject was already being discussed in the thread entitled, "Patriots". http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=137998&page=4

OK, I think I understand now. In order to get Staley in the 1st round, the 49ers traded with the Patriots. The Patriots sent their 2007 1st round pick to the 49ers for the 2007 4th round pick and the 2008 1st round pick of the 49ers. The 2007 4th round pick of the 49ers was then sent to Oakland for Randy Moss. Right?

Brady is under contract for several more years, obviously.
Maroney is still making rookie contract money.
Wes Welker is locked up for 5 years at an insanely low salary.
Moss is a free agent in the offseason (you better believe they will re-sign him).
Donte Stallworth is a free agent (they prob let him go).
Kelley Washington (WR) is a free agent (they'll let him go as he is too much of a cap hit for a WR that isn't really going to make the field much. Will probably give his cap space to Moss).
Asante Samuel (CB) is a free agent (he wants big money, so the Pats will let him go).
A few other defensive players will need to be restructured or signed to extensions soon, but they will still be around (Wilfork, Colvin).
Adalius Thomas is locked up for six years. Vrabel is locked-in until 2009.
Also, Bruschi and Seau will probably be retiring very soon.

Overall, they are going to keep a lot of their "core" players around.

As for their pick, I'm guessing they will probably trade it for a combination of current and future picks. The Pats will not want to spend the money for a top-5 pick.

So, the Patriots traded their late first-round pick (which I assume was like the 31st overall pick) and basically got Randy Moss and a top-5 pick in return...
