While I play games for a variety of reasons, I certainly enjoy playing games that involve a complex and well-developed storyline (probably the main thing I look for in just about any game actually). It is always interesting to play a game for 20 hrs involving what seems to be a pretty straightforward story, and then you hit that "WTF?!" point that makes you see things in a brand new light (not to mention all the religious, moral, and/or philosophical issues that are being addressed). Of course, most of my favorite games are usually games with really great storylines, like Xenogears or Metal Gear Solid. I just wanted to get some discussion on this subject here (might have had a thread like this in the past, but oh well). BTW, this is yet another thread inspired by my playthrough of Chrono Cross (take that potential game-breaking glitch!).
metal gear solid was the best game all around that i have experienced. there was tension, twists, great controller interaction. the story was awesome.
metal gear solid has a nice action story. but suikoden series is my favorite-- the second game is my favorite, although suikoden v is really good too. the only one in the series with a weak story, actually, was suiko iv. everything else is gold.
I play games mostly for storyline as well. Mass Effect: from all the reviews I have read has an epic story. KOTOR: Had the storyline twist, that for the first time in a videogame, I did not see coming Final Fantasy games have great storys for the most part and I get a lot of enjoyment though them. Assassins Creed, where I'm at so far. has a really good story going. A good game is like a good movie, if there is not a good story then for the most part the game is not going to be that good.
Not really - Gears of War's story made about zero sense but the game was fun regardless. I have posted this before - video game storylines are incredibly hampered by the fact that unlike a movie, the main character is constantly dying and reviving - which makes it hard to build credible continuity.

In the game, the player controls the character of General George Armstrong Custer, depicted as a man wearing nothing but a cavalry hat, boots, and a bandana, sporting a visible erection. Custer has to overcome various obstacles to achieve his goal, which is to have intercourse with a crudely depicted, naked, large-breasted Native American woman, named "Revenge", who is bound to a post. The game prompted criticism from women's rights groups who stated that the simulation of having sex with a tied-up woman was a simulation of rape. Other groups such as Women Against p*rnography, Native American spokespersons, and critics of the video game industry in general protested the game. Aside from complaints over the game's sexual content, many found the gameplay simplistic. People also found the p*rnography element of the game inadequate—the two characters' appearances have been compared to Lego bricks or cardboard boxes.[3] The focused media attention caused the game to sell approximately 80,000 copies, twice as many copies as Mystique's other X-rated games, Bachelor Party and Beat 'Em & Eat 'Em.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The corruption and cruelty that became Delita is still something that I think about every now and then. What did he accomplish? Didn't he betray Teta by becoming the thing he hated most?
Wow, a lot of KOTOR. I'd have to agree with that (and also KOTOR 2). Stories and plot twists were good. But what I'd like most was the dialogue and the choices you made between lightside and darkside. It went "deeper" than the movies did on what it meant to be good and evil... that was the cool part for me.
