The reason she was getting the lashes in the first place was not because she was raped, but rather she was traveling in a car with unrelated males. Yes, it is unbelievable cause for a punishment, but you have to realize they have their own laws for a reason. I think its foolish to say just because it is so ridiculous from a Western standpoint, it is ridiculous from an Saudi viewpoint.

Cases like these are not the norm. Saudi's can point out how a child molester in the US is released from jail after 10 years, and then goes on to molest and murder another child. Then people over there will be saying how American laws are so archaic and backwards as to not punish this child molester more harshly in the first place. Or what about Catholic priests molesting children, with church cover up and no consequence for so many years? Is it the norm?-no. But Muslims can cite this as a part of a perverse Christian religion of course.

Basically, there is no way you can frame a situation like this in your own mind, if you don't actually understand the people behind it.

What should make you sick is the Saudi treatment of women. And Islam is what makes me sick.

Ok, so let's not generalize about their culture based on this one case, just like they shouldn't generalize about ours based on the cases you mentioned. Let's just talk about this one case.

What's happening to this girl is ridiculous, not just from a "Western standpoint" but from a human one. She's already suffered far too much.

Suppose your kid/nephew/whatever was riding his bike without a helmet and he crashed and hit his head. Would you spank him for riding without his helmet? No, you'd take him to the hospital. I don't mean to suggest that what happened to the girl was related to her riding in a car with a guy, just that the emotional trauma of what's already happened to her kind of overwhelms the need for her to be punished under any reasonable standards.

This part is okay, if overly general:

This part is just simply not:

Getting 110 lashes for getting raped means getting treated with utmost respect?

    Whatever floats your boat.

I have respect for other people so I wouldn't go around saying that the world would be a better place without Christianity, etc

    It didn't make sense.

There is no justification for these "laws".

The assumption that they have "their own laws for a reason" is incorrect. Some laws and/or their application are just wrong and inhumane. Just because something is called law, written down in statutes or decreed by a judge does not mean it is right - that is something I can attest to from my own country's dark history. Getting 110 lashes for sitting in a car with guys is barbaric, whichever way you try to twist it.

What if a woman wants to drive, or work or have some say in their life? What you are talking about isn't about treating women with respect but treating them like pets. They are loved and cared for but otherwise are not given any control of their life

Agreed there are obviously vast cultural differences between us and them and we do have some flaws. As individuals though we don't completely check our values at the border and while we should try to be understanding that doesn't mean we shouldn't be willing to express our disaproval. For instance there are cultures that still practice slavery but few would consider that acceptable just because that is there practice and we should be understanding.

Hmm, that's the tricky part since they can't drive in the company of another man, but they aren't trusted enough to drive alone or with other women.

Good thing they're not smart enough to know how to drive. Besides, there isn't an oven addon in Bentleys.

Witch trials, third world colonialism and the Inquisition; all religions have growing pains.

and a Saudi could equally point out Western laws he would find very offensive. To label something as barbaric just because it doesnt fit into your world view is to bury your head in the sand. They arent going to change just because you dont like it. I'm not defending their actions, but its their law. If Saudis dont like it, they can change it.

Yes. The women who can't vote will change the laws to make their lives better. That makes perfect sense.

Actually, it's an extra 110 lashes for daring to complain about the court's inital assessment of 90 lashes. How dare she challenge the wisdom of men...
    lowly female.

Agreed it is up to the Saudis to change it. That doesn't mean we can't criticize.

Saudi is a complete sh**hole. If it weren't for oil, they'd be a hot desert with people that are Africa-poor.

What would be impetus for change? The men there have all the power why would they give it up, and thousands of years of cultural and/or religious doctrine has stamped it into their head not to change. We should have just invaded Saudi. There is a base right there, and we could use their oil to lower gas prices.
