I have a couple of questions about using Word 2007 or for that matter any edition of Word. I am just using 2007.

    1. How do you insert pictures to the left or right margins in a document and get text of the document to flow around the pictures? All I have been able to do is insert the picture and then there is a huge, empty gap between the text and the picture.

    2. How do I number pages without numbering the first page. The first page is a cover page and does not need a number but the rest do. How do I accomplish this?

I don't have my computer with Word 2007 handy, but Word 2003 has an option when you insert page numbers to check or uncheck a box to "show numbers on first page". Word 2007 doesn't have the same check box?

I just found this. On the top of your Word, select the "Format" tab and in the box second to the right there is a "Position" or "Text Wrapping." Either one works.

Click "Insert", then point to "Picture", then click "From File..." or "From Clip Art..." .
    Select the photo/picture.
Once the picture is in the document, click the picture to select it and see the Picture Toolbar.
    Right-Click on the photo.
    Select "Format Picture...".
On the resulting dialog box, click "Layout" tab on top.
Click "TIGHT" *not that kind of tight*. You should be able to move the photo anywhere, and Word will move the text TIGHTLY around it. You can also determine how much space is between the photo and the text. Play around with the various options on that section.
I think someone already answered this, but JUST IN CASE: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP012276571033.aspx .

    ;)

    :D

sorry I found your reply to be very amusing for some reason.

I don't have 2007 so I can't help you (even though I'm a word processor by trade), but you should be able to access it by right clicking on the picture and then going to 'format picture'>layout. you want to use the "in front of text" option. After doing this you can move the picture around to whever you decide with the mouse.

As for the page number thing. again I don't have 2007 but Word can't have changed too much. You should be able to change things by going to File>Page Setup>Layout, and then clicking the "Different First Page" option. It will allow you to keep the header/footer of the first page of any section to be different from the rest of the pages in the section. This could be problematic if you have multiple sections, but we'll cross that river if we come to it.

OK, the tight text wrapping is working perfectly. Is there anyway I can put a description of the picture just under the picture?

the simplest way to do it is to use a textbox. It's usually found on your drawing toolbar next to the big blue A.

It might be the simplest way, but there is an "Insert Caption" option on the context menu (right-click) of the picture.

You can then continue to format the caption. Problem is that you can't do too much with it. It will be a caption just like in the newspapers.

I would recommend putting both the picture AND the caption inside a textbox altogether so that they stay together all the time and you can just move the textbox boundary as you please, and you can even color the background and outline of the entire textbox.

At the top of your Word 2007 document should be a "Page Number" box. Let your mouse hover over it and you should be able to hit F1 for help. Find the section "Start the page numbering with a different number" and I think that will answer your question.
