My girlfriend's birthday is coming up, and unfortunately I don't have that much money (student)... she won't mind me getting her something cheap, but I do think she expects some thought behind what I do. So of course considering that I am a guy I will need some help on this as I can't just throw money at it. ;-) The day of her actual birthday is already completely planned so doing something then (like a surprise thing to do) is not an option. Maybe something for later like cheap tickets to a play/event/etc is something to keep in mind? I'd like to get the opinion from the girls on the board as well! So what have you guys done in the past that has been successful?
What's your budget? I got my girl a Tmac jersey last month since I don't know what to get her. I also got her a Harry Potter scarf from Hot Topic since she's a huge fan of that stuff (we even get into fights because of stupid HP). In terms of things to do I think most of the board here advised me to go to the museum.
What does she like? Cheap and useful usually are a not good combination so you need to go with more sentimental. Then make the presentation of the gift (or gift exchange) more exciting / different - like making her favorite food and taking her on a picnic (corny but just used as an example).
Good idea. Am thinking of maybe getting tickets to some exhibition maybe? Or maybe some tickets to the zoo? I am just thinking whether she will think "the zoo?! err okaaaay..." My budget is low, dependant on what kind of cheap ideas I get! ;-) I'd like to spend as little as possible, but I do have a variable budget. I live in the UK as well, so she doesn't know who TMac is, lol. The Harry Potter scarf idea sounds cool though... I got quite a cool scarf for a friend a few years ago from one of the shops here, only cost me a fiver. The picnic is a good idea, however I have cooked for her quite a lot in the past so it would not seem special. I can't take her out for an actual picnic because it is FREEZING right now. Otherwise that would have been a good call. Thanks for the ideas so far, it's getting my creative side going! I'm thinking the museum is a good idea, I think I can get some free tickets to an exhibition through the University...!
Also she is quite feminine so corny won't really make me look too bad, as long as it's not too over the top. Will also definitely make a big effort on the packaging of the presents. One practical thing I am definitely getting her is a book to learn Dutch (she wants this), as she is now learning it through a skills exchange programme at work. Can anyone think of anything creative I can do with the Dutch thing? I am dutch by the way...
Get a bottle of Champagne, some strawberries, write her a wonderful letter, rent a good movie and buy a new and goodlooking cuddling blanket to wrap yourself and your girl in during the movie........... (unless it is summertime where you live of course). Take her out to something cool going round in your area, f.e. http://www.mfah.org/main.asp?target=exhibition&par1=1&par2=1&par3=366 or take her out for a nice dinner, drink some italian wine and make plans about future holidays, f.e. at: http://www.13celsius.com/ good luck!
What about making a dutch evening at your place: get some Gouda cheese, buy some tulips, even make a dutch dinner: http://www.thehollandring.com/food.shtml and give her the dutch dictionary on top of that.
dude, just cut out different fonts of letters from magazines and spell out, "I love you." place it in her car the night before she goes to work. i promise you, she'll be the happiest girl that day and you'll the the happiest guy that night.
If she's one of those feminine types, you can definitely do the dinner and a movie thing too. Like make her come over and turn off the lights and put a letter on the table with directions of what to do, like ya know, that one episode from Fresh Prince of Bellaire where Will surprises Lisa with dinner. And then once she's all nice and situated and everything you can come out with a cape and sing "love me tender" with a guitar. Hahaha ok sorry, I thought this would be such a GREAT idea before typing this but halfway through I just started cracking up. Unfortunately he lives in the UK. But hey if you're ever in town, you can come to Harwin.
i was going to say something similar. stick it in her poo poo hole as a bday gift that she'll never forget, haha.
Whenever I have been tight on cash, I have mustered the strength to get my girl a lovely pearl necklace. Sure, it takes willpower and discipline, but she will feel like a Princess.
