Of course, winning is what stabilizes your fan base. But from the owner's point of view, selecting Vince Young was somewhat of a no brainer. Vince Young was actually capable of being the #1 pick. His college career got him there...forget the fact that he's from Houston and Houston had the first pick. Young's college resume alone earned him attention at #1. How many of you even heard of Mario Williams? David Carr was given more chances than usual. Some Texan fans would tell you that David Carr should NOT have been a Texan even the year before the VY, Mario, Reggie draft. To many Texan fans, QB was a hole for the Texans. Sure, they have MANY other holes to fill, but what makes you think that defensive end is as important as QB or vice versa. A need is a need. No matter who the Texans selected...everyone knew that more than likely, the Texans would still have a losing record. Why did everyone think that? because the team had more holes than draft picks...I think you and I can agree to that. If you're the owner, and you're looking to create a REAL fan base, why would you go with THE MOST unpopular pick in Texan fans' eyes? If you were going to stink no matter who you drafted, why not select the guy that would at least put more people in your fan base? And it's not like Vince Young was not deserving of the first pick. As I've said before, Vince Young had a TREMENDOUS college career. He proved over and over that he delivered and won in the clutch, he improved every year, and he already had a fan base in Austin. He would have carried most of Austin football fans to the Texan fan base. I am not from UT nor am I a Vince Young fan. I hate him now because he is a Titan. I am a Houston Texan fan through and through. What's done is done, but some fans feel betrayed by the selection of Mario Williams...especially since there's no return on investment yet. I just don't understand why some won't let that go. He's on a rival, yet they cheer for him. Imagine how big this fan base would be if he actually played for your team.
by some of the logic here shouldn't Rex Grossman be starting in the pro bowl each year? All he did was win and get to the superbowl, but i guess D's dont help a QB win. Long live the Texans! and as long as "he" plays for the enemy I hope his Wonderlick (spelling?) score is higher than his passer rating.
Everything you said is completely reasonable. The Texans took a risky pick--they picked for the long-term future instead of for the immediate "here-and-now". I *still* agree with the logic behind their pick. It backfired on them, though. And it backfired, not because of MW, but because they grossly overestimated David Carr. Grossly.
actually, a more accurate statement this year is that he hasnt lost it for the titans. Their defense and kicker have "won" more games than vince. Kerry collins...all he does is win. yes, an amazing 5 yard run...really he walked it in. But wait, someone else said defenses solely game plan on him, that they always spy him...curious no one was even near him on that play. But it was a good play. Not great, nothing spectacular. It's the least he could do after his 2 INTs. Yes, they are the 3rd best rushing team in the NFL....I know VY helps, but you are also talking about just over 20 yards rushing per game. He can, and has got some timely first downs, but i dont think he has more than 2 rushing 1st downs in a game this season. 11 all season i think, 2 of which were TDs (which i believe are actually counted as first downs, statistically) You take away his avg yards per game and the titans are STILL flirting with top 10 in the league...just a yard or 2 behind the cowboys. Thats impressive and a testiment to the o-line and offensive scheming. Think of the time of possession if VY hasnt turned the ball over almost 2 times a game as well.
if you say vince young cant throw, you probably havent even watched a game. hes no tom brady, but the guy is amazing. i am not buttchering the texans or mario williams or anything.. but vince young is an amazing player, and improves a team trifold
When would they even have the opportunity to go after Andre Johnson? He was never a free agent and the Texans would never get rid of him.
vince young has made the titans my 2nd favorite team. cowboys have and always will be first. texans are garbage.
There should be another choice: Do you like Soulja Boy more than the Texans, Titans, and Vince Young?
