I added a poll, although it isn't really my focus with this thread I guess.

I used to look at all the main sites for video game reviews (1UP, IGN, Gamespot, GameSpy, Eurogamer, etc.), and I also looked at magazine reviews a lot too (Game Informer, EGM, Famitsu, Edge, etc.). Oh yeah, can't forget about X-Play. After a while, I started to gravitate to a few primary sources, mostly Gamespot and IGN. Then it was just Gamespot, followed by Gamespot and Gametrailers (I love video reviews), and then followed by pretty much just Gametrailers.

Without getting into specifics, I don't put much emphasis on reviews from any of them anymore (or even all of them together in some cases). I'm not sure if my knowledge of the review process has affected things (how could reviewers review games they don't even finish?), or if perhaps the state of video game reviews has just gotten worse (along with video game journalism for that matter). Of course, it isn't like I let these reviewers make decisions regarding my gaming habits in years past, but I certainly would put a lot of stock into what they said. Or, perhaps more specifically, what they rated a game (because a 8.8 game is clearly better than a 8.7 game ;)). Once I started ignoring review scores (which probably should be ignored by everyone), I think I just ended up realizing how poor some reviews are.

As I sort of alluded to earlier, I think I'd rather just watch 5-10 minutes of gameplay that represents a particular game well, and use that to decide whether I should try out the game (of course, if a demo is available, I'd use that instead). I'd still probably check out the general consensus on a game at a site like Metacritic or Gamerankings as well (maybe a 80+ means I should definitely give it a shot, 60-80 means rent it but don't expect much, and for the rest...well....yeah). Impressions from fellow gamers can be helpful as well, especially if they're interested in a game for the same reason as you are (similar to how you might look at a review from OperationSports vs IGN for a sports game).

I start out with IGN. I like their website format. Gamespot's just seems too cluttered. If the IGN review piques my interest, I will do more research on other sites.

I do enjoy 1up for their articles. I've always been a sucker for EGM's journalistic style.

i used to work in the marketin dept for aspyr media, a video game publisher mainly on mac... anyway, arguably my main duty was to track all of our game reviews and rankings.. and i would pretty much just use www.gamerankings.com ... b/c it links you to every other review sites rankings, i always considered it the best source, at least to find a general consensus of reviews

The reviews section of gamefaqs. The quantity really helps, because I tend to look for different things(usually small things) in a game compared to what the major sites write.

For pictures, I use gamespot because that's the easiest place to visit from gamefaqs.

Just a combination, usually of Gamespot, IGN and 1UP.

Even then it won't make the decision for me. But I think the larger 'sample size' will give me a good idea of how a game turned out.

If I do look up reviews from a major website, it is IGN. That used to be my only form of reviews about 5+ years ago but I can't conpletely trust their "opinions" anymore.

One year the gave NBA2K a 9.8. I was a BIIIG Inside Drive guy but I thought the game must be unbelievable to get that high a score. I sold it on on ebay within one day of buying it I hated it so much. I thought it played HORRIBLE. Now, I love the NBA2K series but IGN gives them pretty bad ratings year in and year out. So, I'm not sure what they are doing.

Now, for sports games, I go to the Operation Sports forums. You get a ton of feedback (negative and positive) about the games and I can make a pretty good decision about buying a game.

For non sports games, usually there is a thread around here for the bigger titles plus I'll scrounge around for some other forums and gameplay videos to base my opinion on.

I always read gamefaqs.com user reviews, unless it's an RPG, and I'll do that and in addition go to rpgfan.com

Otherwise it's reading reviews here for games I have a general interest in

You can't really pick just one. I usually read all of the tem. The best thing, buy them used at gamestop which has a 5 day satisfaction policy (or something like that) and return it if you don't enjoy the game.

You also can't just judge game based on rankings but your personal preferrence as well. For example, I wont enjoy most FPS because I'm not a fan of the genre but almost any quarky puzzle/adventure game will get me hooked.

GameTrailers' video reviews are the best...problem with that site though, is that they don't review every game. and I'm not even talking about small obscure ones, there's a lot of major big games that they don't have video reviews for

do you have any idea why that is RC?

I wish you'd dig up more free games and demo's that are worth downloading (not crippled, who wants to download a 500mb file that only plays for 2 minutes) :D

I do appreciate your game threads as is, however. Thanks!

I discovered IGN when it first came out. I've seen them go through all of their site updates. I've never checked out any of the other sites on the list, but their presentation makes them seem like the best to me.
