I'll give him a few more games thou.
Sure We can still beat mediocre teams with either Yao or Tmac. but we cant do crap against real tough competitors with a 50% Yao+ Tmac.

If this is what Coach A's plan, then I'd say trade Yao for a Center who has better passing skills and range, we might still have a chance to win the Championship.

With the Rockets up 88-87 with 6:15 left, the Mavericks took off on a 10-2 run to take over. And with the Rockets within 101-94 with 2:44 left, they made just one of their next six shots: a Yao jump hook in the lane.

"Best shot, best quick shot," Adelman said of what he wanted rather than the quick 3s the Rockets launched. "We need to attack the basket. If it's a two- or three-possession game, a 3 is not going to get you back in it; you just have to score. I thought we could have gone inside, we could have attacked the basket and (we could) try to get to the line and stop the clock. That's what you want to do. That's why I didn't take (Yao) out toward the end there."

Yao doesn't attack
The hook was one of only two shots Yao took in the fourth quarter. He made both. But from the start, the Mavericks took him from the offense by quickly double-teaming him to the point the Rockets were still looking elsewhere when the Mavericks no longer sent extra defensive help Yao's way.

"I think he's got to learn he's got to be aggressive and take it," Adelman said. "He's got to be a real force. And we've got to go to him if they're not going to double him.

"He can catch it and go right away (against double-teams). In the second half, they weren't coming on the run. That's when he has to be really aggressive. He was finding the right people at the start of the game. But as the game wears on and they're not coming at you, we have to go to him."

No-brainer plays
The Rockets made mistakes they had not made before. Adelman called them "lapses."

To the Rockets, still chasing the league's best, they were more of the same.

"We were right in the game," Adelman said. "I think it's a matter of our team learning what we have to do to beat good teams."

For all that is different, that much still has not changed.

I think we just got beat up at the end. plain and simple. they were the better team, and they didn't even have devin harris.

Shame that when he WAS aggressive against the double, he got a massive dunk, and then was immediately benched by an obviously displeased Adelman.

I'm pretty sure that when Yao was not doubled in the post, he backed it in on Diop and did not fail to score.

Let's see if Adelman actually means for the team to feed Yao or not. We will find out tomorrow I suppose.

Juwan was still in the game, they substituted Josh Howard in for Terry. Yao can guard Juwan just fine, and next stoppage they subbed in Diop for Howard. The Mavs going small was not the reason Adelman took Yao out. If you look at the picture with Deke and Adelman, Deke is celebrating the dunk while RA is clearly displeased. Yao immediately gets the hook after.

Rockets have long way to go in West
Charley Rosen

The Rockets were bested in Dallas on Monday, 107-98, in the first of this season's several Texas showdowns. Houston was undefeated (3-0) coming into the game and hoping to prove that they could play with the league's best — which they did, but only for 44 minutes.

In appraising the Rockets' near-win, let's examine their performance from the best to the worst.

A-Game

Yao Ming was outstanding in the low-post. He was regularly double-teamed and came up with numerous flawless out-passes. He only registered three assists, but his accurate passwork enabled several assist-passes to be executed by his teammates. On the three occasions when he wasn't two-timed, Yao wheeled into the middle and dropped three jump-hooks. Even better, in the third quarter he split a double-team and rang up a dramatic dunk. Yao also hit on three of his five mid-range jumpers and generally made impeccable decisions with the ball.

Chuck Hayes played superb defense in difficult iso-situations versus Dirk Nowitzki and Jerry Stackhouse. Hayes showed great anticipation, quick feet, quick hands and admirable power. His defense was so good that the Rockets never bothered to double whomever Hayes was defending.

Shane Battier also had a superior defensive game. He jammed Nowitzki's attempt to score in the low post several times, and also forced Josh Howard into missing a hotly contested 17-footer.

Both Hayes and Battier also made several helpful defensive rotations.

Rafer Alston ran the offense smoothly, efficiently and without committing a single turnover. Instead of forcing his shots and/or his drives, Alston was content to properly position the ball so that the Rockets could easily get into their designated plays.

When Tracy McGrady undertook his several isos, he always looked for open teammates cutting to the hoop. Most of his eight assists created uncontested layups.

Bonzi Wells rebounded like a big man — four offensive and four defensive — and also played extraordinary man-to-man defense against Nowitzki. Wells showed terrific hustle in trailing a fast break and putting back a missed layup by T-Mac.

Luis Scola executed several textbook box outs.

B-Game

T-Mac looked quicker than ever driving both left and right. He seemed stronger and more confident. McGrady's perpetual isos put enormous pressure on the Mavs' defense and led to his shooting 11 free throws — of which he made 10.

Luther Head shot the ball extremely well — 2-of-2 on his layups, and a bull's-eye on his only 3-ball.

Scola made a number of effective defensive rotations.

Yao did a good job on the defensive boards and was instrumental in limiting the Mavs to a total of only eight offensive rebounds. (The Rockets totaled 11.)

Wells looked to pass more often (and more willingly) than ever before. Each of his four assists were picture-perfect.

C-Game

The Rockets' first two possessions eventuated in plays for Battier. He was fouled on a curl, and then hit a jump hook from the low-post. But Battier's number was never called again.

D-Game

The Rockets' offense was extremely unbalanced. McGrady took 31 shots (making only 12), while Yao was 9-of-12. This, despite the fact that Yao's passes out of double-teams always generated good looks for others. Indeed, McGrady posted more times than did Yao.

Wells was extremely sloppy with the ball — three turnovers — and also forced several shots, going 1-for-7.

The Rockets aimed to defend high-screens in several different ways: Going under the screen — which allowed too many open treys (the Mavs were 8-of-18). Occasionally switching — usually only when Battier or Hayes were the switchers — which was fairly successful. But for the most part, the Rockets wanted the man guarding the screener to sink into the middle with the nearest perimeter defender sliding over to help the man being screened. However, when Dallas really needed a bucket, they cleared out a side and ran wing screen-fades that left too much ground for the designated helpers to cover — and resulted in several critical baskets on wide-open jumpers.

The Rockets' wings over-committed whenever a Mav drove the ball into the middle. Consequently, they were unable to recover in time to put any pressure on the wing-shots that resulted from quick kick-out passes.

While Scola played good team defense, he was routinely lost in screen/roll situations and was helpless whenever Nowitzki took the ball right at him. Also, Scola's only jumper was an 18-footer that threatened to crack the backboard.

Yao fumbled two passes that he could have easily converted into layups. He also turned his head on defense allowing DeSagana Diop to catch the ball directly under the hoop — but was bailed out when Diop traveled.

Dikembe Mutombo played only briefly and was completely lost on defense.

F-Game

Alston was helpless on defense. He was burned when he topped a down-screen and let J.J. Barea make a simple back-cut that turned into a layup. And he was absolutely chumped by Jason Terry.

The Rockets missed 11 layups — one each by Mike James and Alston, two each by Wells and Hayes and five by T-Mac.

James took too many forced shots, going 4-of-13, and made several lazy wing-passes, and was also atrocious on the defensive end.

The Rockets' end-game was a disaster that featured:
# A pair of bad passes by James.
# McGrady missing highly makeable shot in a crowd.
# Yao fumbling a perfect entry pass.
# Alston shooting an airball.
# Alston also had a layup blocked.
# A clear-out screen-fade left Nowitzki unguarded and let him bury a critical 16-footer.

So, then, exactly where are the Rockets and what might their immediate fate be?

They certainly have plenty of scoring power — but Yao needs many more touches in the paint (he played almost exclusively on the high-post in the first half).

Instead of being fed a steady diet of mid-court isos, McGrady needs to receive the ball after curling off of weak-side screens, i.e., within the context of a team-oriented operation.

Rick Adelman has to decide whether Alston or James is his primary point guard. On the basis of this game, the nod has to go to Alston.

The S/R defense has to be tweaked. But, given the current personnel, the perimeter defense just might be beyond fixing.

The Rockets have a long journey ahead of them, but unless drastic measures are taken, it certainly looks as though they're no better than a second-rate power in the Western Conference. But even more galling to Houston fans, the Rockets are likely to be only the third-best team in Texas.

The latter possibility is probably more galling to Houston fans than the former.

T-Mac should pass more balls to Yao since he always has off night with bad shoting percentage and trade the bunch of average PG to a IQ PG. Otherwise, Rocket cannot win in playoff again!! The same old story!!

screw the refs.

we were down by 6, and diop came over to double team yao but, then stayed at the paint. so.... yao at top, with defender. tracy at left block with defender. and tracy and other tried to cut, but because of diop... we couldn't do anything. and diop was in the paint for like 7 seconds. seriously, it was like 4 and half. ( i knew refs would screw us somehow, so i noticed diop coming in, so i started counting)
