It also got quiet because suddenly the sound is picking up through the announcer's microphones instead of compressed audience mics. The crowd mics are certainly enhanced - just not in the way suspected (ie, via cd.). They do the same with room mics in a recording studio - smashing them with compression before mixing them to taste. Add in the overall compression from the mix position and the compression at the source of broadcast (tv station) and you get a pretty squashed signal.

I played playground football with Joseph's brother, Jefferey, during recess at A.A. Milne. I was the only guy that could catch him and tackle him. That guy was FAST.

Back on topic, if it was CBS's fault, how come the Patriots reportedly heard it in the stadium?

There is nothing lying or cheating about Brady's pinpoint passing, moss' one handed receptions, and the poise of there defensive schemes.

There were some really really bad pass interference calls in this game, in the colts favor, they were in Indy's home field, noise was being piped in, AND THEY STILL WON.

Pats are good. Undefeated season. Be thankful you get to witness this, you can tell your grandchildren about it one day.

The Patriots have a history of lying and cheating, despite excellent play. This is fact.

The Colts did NOT have fake crowd audio playing. This is also fact.

It's not unreasonable to assume the Patriots players are lying about that.

Yeah, if CBS says it, it must be true.

    Sincerely,
    Dan Rather

The Steelers are widely considered one of the classiest organizations in football, and they've also previously reported to the NFL that the Colts were filtering in fake crowd audio. See my link on the first page. Are they lying, cheating douchebags too?

As a Houstonian I don't think I need to state how I feel about the Steelers.

That was so obvious you'd think someone on the field or in the stands would have noticed it and stepped forward.

Therefore unless someone does step up I think CBS is being honest.

While I wouldn't totally dismiss it being possible the Colts add in crowd noise, I think this is definitely a temporary feed problem with CBS here. Not to mention I don't think they would cover for the Colts if it wasn't them.

It was just quiet afterward because NE just got a big first down. I honestly think it would be pretty obvious if an opposing team came in and there was substantial phony crowd noise playing...you'd have to be a damn good audio guy to pot it down each time before the actual crowd noise went down...because if you didn't, I think it would be pretty obvious in most stadiums that it was coming from the speakers. The only time it really woudn't be noticeable is when the crowd is already pretty loud, in which case it probably wouldn't make that big of a difference.

You do realize there would have been about 60,000 people that would have noticed it, no? And not all of them are Colts fans who would know that they need to shut up and pretend they didn't hear it. Are you actually claiming that 60,000 people are conspiring to keep it quiet?

i think the mic that's picking up the majority of the crowd noise started skipping meaning one of the encoders froze up. it is 5.1 surround sound. so we only heard maybe 1 or 2 channels of that skipping. announcers are through the center channel which was probably fine. and those that dont have surround, they down mix it for the stereo folks.

so engineer heard the sound skipping, and he muted the mic which is why it got super quiet.

Since when did I say I thought it was true?

What I said was that CBS saying something doesn't make it fact. There's still suspicion, considering they've been accused of it before, and considering that Dennis Green's son admitted the Vikings used to do it ten years ago. Does it look likely considering CBS admitted to the mistake, and considering no stories have come out about the fans that were there (keep in mind, the next day edition stories had not yet come out when I posted that)? No. All I said was that CBS saying it didn't necessarily make it fact.

Every stadium in Houston does this. You can really tell when you sit in the suites at Minute Made. It is common everywhere.

I've sat in the suites at Minute Maid and have never noticed a thing. I also know for a fact it is not done at Reliant.

Like I said earlier...it would take a damn good audio engineer to be able to time it perfectly and be able to cut the sound before the actual crowd quiets. It would be pretty obvious to everyone in the stadium, including the opposing team, if the opposing team makes a big play to shutup the real crowd and then after that there is still artificial noise playing. If so many places were doing this someone would've f*cked up by now and left it playing too long and the opposing team would've noticed.

Man it turns out the cheaters were playing the cheaters in the game of the century. Its hard now to root for either team to win the Super Bowl.

Loud and Cleared: N.F.L. Says Colts Didn’t Pump in Noise

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 5 — In case the New England Patriots’ fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Indianapolis Colts did not do enough to stoke the N.F.L.’s best rivalry, what came afterward surely will.

The National Football League cleared the Colts on Monday of complaints made by the Patriots — and first reported by Yahoo Sports — that the Colts had pumped artificial crowd noise into the RCA Dome during Sunday’s game.

An odd reverberating sound pattern could be heard on the CBS broadcast, but not inside the stadium. A statement released by the N.F.L. said CBS had explained the “unusual audio moment” as being the result of tape feedback.

The Colts (7-1) had been suspected by opponents of pumping up the crowd noise in the already thunderous RCA Dome, but they have never been found in violation of the rules.

“We trust this will put an end to the ridiculous and unfounded accusations that the Colts artificially enhanced crowd noise at the RCA Dome in any way,” the Colts said in a statement.

The allegations will do nothing to enhance the frosty relationship between the organizations.

Coach Bill Belichick also said Monday that the Patriots (9-0) did not have use of the coach-to-quarterback communication system.

“Basically, we didn’t have a coach-to-quarterback operation, so we had to signal in all of the plays, which is unusual, but that’s the way it was,” Belichick said in Foxborough, Mass. “What all was going on, I can’t tell you, but I can tell you that, from a functional standpoint, the coach-to-quarterback was basically useless.”

At least there will be plenty of story lines for a potential rematch, and almost everyone expects that there will be one during the playoffs between the N.F.L.’s best teams.

But first, the teams will go on very different paths. The Patriots have a bye, then will play the Bills in a game that was deemed compelling enough to be moved to prime time.

The Colts suddenly find themselves in a race to hold on to their lead over the surging Titans (6-2) in the American Football Conference South. The Colts will end a grueling stretch — a Monday night game at Jacksonville, at Carolina and against the Patriots — Sunday night at San Diego.

“We’re trying to win our division,” Indianapolis Coach Tony Dungy said. “That’s going to be our focus. It’s going to be a fight all the way through here. You can’t assume we’ll see these guys again. We’ve got to get ourselves in.”

The Colts are unsure if receiver Marvin Harrison, who did not play against the Patriots, will be available. The Colts were also without two starting linebackers and left tackle Tony Ugoh, and the rookie receiver Anthony Gonzalez dislocated his thumb on the first play of the game. The linebackers, Freddy Keiaho and Tyjuan Hagler, will be especially important to the Colts’ efforts to stop LaDainian Tomlinson.

If there is concern that the Colts will have a letdown after playing such a highly anticipated game, there is even greater worry that the Chargers are desperate for a victory.

“They’re 4-4, which none of us expected at this point,” Dungy said. “I don’t think we’ll have a letdown. In losing this ballgame, we can’t afford a letdown. We’ve had some tough losses around here, we’ve had losses where people left us for far more dead than this. We’ve had some physical games, we’ve had some emotional games. To be honest, this one wasn’t that different from us preparing for Jacksonville, even though it might seem that way.”

Dungy and the Colts were not interested in moral victories Monday, the pain of losing a late lead still so fresh. But the Colts should be able to find solace in a 7-1 start, which, incredibly, is their worst start in three years. Last season, the Colts started 9-0, but they lost a 14-7 lead in the fourth quarter at Dallas to begin a period in which they lost four of six games.

“We didn’t think it was the end of the world, but we went through a stretch when we didn’t play our best ball,” Dungy said.

Dungy said he believed the Patriots had the best chance to go undefeated of any team in the last few years. Dungy, of course, has some perspective on perfect seasons.

Two years ago, the Colts started 13-0, lost two of the last three regular-season games, then lost to Pittsburgh in their first playoff game.
