The "not switch" strategy does not look so good right now. Somebody (Almu?) said that the Rox problem last year vs. the Williams/Boozer P&R in the playoffs was a departure from the switch. I thought I would note that since it's almu who might have said it.
I know one thing that kills us. Terry dribbles to the corner off the pick, we help all the way to the baseline, he turns and passes back to the picker (who we run at), then the picker passes to the next guy (who we run at), and then they throw it inside. All our defenders end up running to the perimeter and they go right past us. Frustrating!!!!
The switch works if both players switch, but Scola was switching and the defender on the ball was trailing the man too not sure who made the mistake but this got the Mavs wide open looks off the rotation of the ball on the semi switch. DD
The 4th quarter problem was more than just PnR defense mechanics. The effort just wasn't there. We lacked intensity on defense.
No doubt, either Scola has to back off that switch or he needs to make it more obvious and press hard on the high side..... I just wonder whose fault it was....Luis or Mike James/Rafers.... Becauase they were the ones on the PG when they made that play. DD
For as crappy as Scola played, I thought he was playing the P n R defense right. He flashed out strong and prevented the penetration. It was the other person who needs to switch and stick with it.
Is that how they intended to play it? I think Scola was supposed to show until his teammate could catch up, and then run back to his guy (Nowitzki). That's how JVG taught it, and that's how Chuck does it. Scola is too slow rotating back to his guy on the perimeter.
The defense tonight really let up in the second half. there were several times we they scored on a pick & roll, and I haven't been happy. Though overall I've been surprised at how well our defense has held up.
That is why, for now, I wondered why Scola was in at the end of the game instead of Chuck. I've seen Luis waaaaaaay out of place on defense more than a handful of time so far this season. I'm sure he'll figure it out, but for now I'd rather have Chuck out there in a nip and tuck game.
If thats the case then Scola is way out of sync. Because the player I was watching was switching and then eventually refinding his man.
I'm really swamped now. I have a few games on DVR that I've watched. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the team, but I'll break things down extensively soon. There is a little adjustment to the PnR defense that I've noticed this year, which has yielded mixed results.
I don't think it's just that the intensity wasn't there. It seems Dallas is just a bad matchup for us because they are quicker and stronger than us. Defensively, they can exploit Yao's lack of speed and have a field day with pick and rolls. Stackhouse, Terry, Howard, Nowitzki are too quick on the perimeter, excellent shooters, and big on the boards. They are just loaded with talent.
all dallas does is drive, kick out, drive, kickout, drive, kickout, and drive until they have a clear shot. it works every time since theyre quicker and stronger than us.
