This past Friday, I was alone at the house as the wife and kid went out to eat with family. Bored with what was on, I found "Carrie" with Sissy Spacek. I then found out that "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was on as well. I wasn't able to watch both all the way through, but I did see most of these 2 films. I had forgotten how good both of these movies were. These weren't the cheesy B-pictures that you hear about it or a straight to video quality. These are movies that would really belong in the top 250 on imdb.

However, I still like "The Shining" (Kubrick's version) the best when it comes to horror movies with "The Ring" a close second. "Psycho" is old but I still enjoy that one as well.

What is your favorite horror movie or movies?

Some dork started a thread about this topic last week. Can't remember who...

Anyway, I saw Hostel this weekend. I thought it was a good idea for a movie, but HORRIBLY executed. I read on IMDb that it was based on true events?

Apparently, there are these things called "murder vacations" where you can pay $10,000 to torture and kill a person in Iceland. IMDb says the director tried to do a documentary on it, but decided that it was too dangerous and instead went with making a movie.

I took a Hitchcock class in college, and we got to see all of his films on a big screen. Psycho on a large screen is SOOOOO much better than on a tv. Vertigo too.

I was one of those kids that read Fangoria and I proudly own the VHS Scream Greats Tribute to Tom Savini.

Serpent and The Rainbow, The Shining, Dawn Of The Dead (Original), & the Evil Dead series are my favorites. "Dawn" is in the running for my favorite movie over-all.

There was a 1960's B/W version of "The Haunting (of Hill House)" that is creepy. It scared me as a kid and I still find it scary-- very few special effects but WOW the tension and creepiness abound.

Am I the only one who thought Psycho was one of the worst horror movies in the history of modern cinema? I know it's blasphemy to say anything negative about Alfred Hitchcock, but I think his movies are just dull and boring.

Psycho could possibly be the most overrated movie of all time. It's almost like everyone likes it just because they know they're supposed to like it.

I've tried watching it several times and I seriously couldn't stay awake for the whole thing. I don't get what makes that movie so great. Frankly, I thought it blew chimps.

    Couldn't disagree with this more.

Hitchcock in this film, the shower scene in particular, showed the 1960 movie going public that what was not seen was what could scare them most. It broke attendance records at most locations around the world when it was released. It broke cinematic taboos of the time, like unmarried couples sharing a bed, sex, violence and, as odd as it sounds, flushing toilets onscreen. It created the "slasher" genre. "Psycho" did for horror movies what "Citizen Kane" did for cinema - elevating them to a new level.

Hitchcock was an ass with a penchant for blondes and any "Psycho" other than the first is trash. The original "Psycho" is, and always will be, a classic in my book.

It was vewry innovative and original, at the time.

Here's a good synopsis of why it is still regarded so highly.

I'm kinda still spooked out by the first Freddy flick, "A Nightmare On Elm Street," comical-at-times as it may be.

    Original Exorcist... and original Omen.

    Not really, actually.

I'm not a huge Hitchcock fan, but Psycho is a brilliant film. But part of the problem for modern viewers is that most people go into the film knowing what's going to happen. They don't get surprised the way the original audience did - my mom has talked to me about seeing a sneak preview of Psycho and how it scared her %$@%less.

However, I agree with you on Hostel. Great potential that was wasted in order to satisfy the director's gorelust.
