Which company has the best looking HD pictures? (comcast, dish, directv, etc.)

I know it depends mostly on your TV, but my gf and I have the exact same HDTV. Her dad has dish, but their HD channels don't look as crisp as the "over the air" HD channels. Who has the better HD feeds?

From what I understand the best HD picture you can get is with a simple over the air antenna assuming your HDTV has a tuner. That's because cable and satellite companies compress the signal in order to get the most out of their limited bandwidth. Over-the-air signals are not compressed (at least not to get the signal smaller for transmission).

Supposedly cable is worse than satellite, however, that's just what I've heard. DirecTV is supposed to be using a newer compression scheme so theoretically their picture could be better but it really depends on if they choose to use the gained bandwidth on picture quality or to squeeze more channels in.

Unless you are really picky and are sitting there and paying attention to little details it all looks the same ... at least to me ... just like I cant tell the damn difference between 720p and 1080i feeds :p

I'd pick my AMPLIFIED ANTENNA (what I have ALWAYS HAD) over PHONE/CABLE (what I have now) or SATELLITE (what I had before).

I've compared the HD feed of all of those and the local antenna blows them all away. Unless you're really far from all the antennae of all the channels, all your channels will look great.

Now, if only at&t U-Verse had PBS HD... I wouldn't have to switch to my locall 8.1 and we'd be in business...

i also think that over the air is supposed to be the best since the sat and cable guys have physical bandwidth limitations

Ah, the daily Comcast sucks thread.

I just switched to Dish, and the HD picture is better, no doubts about it.

No, I don't. Only the local channels with DIGITAL stations can send you a signal. You need cable or satellite hook up for FSN, unless they've gone local...

Nonetheless, I am still pissed that UNdIVISION, TELEFUCHITURA, TV sAZ-TECA and TELEDUMBO don't have HD yet... their signal is digital, but no HD.

DirectTV is running this commercial saying they have 70 HD channels and will have 100 by EOY. Anyone has DirectTV now? I'm seriously considering switching. Comcast is unbearably bad.

I read an article saying that this advertising is misleading because the number includes premium and on-demand channels.

The TVs are not expensive or the service? I have satellite and am afraid that upgrading will be expensive. I am not real worried about the TV because they are cheap.

I have DirecTV, there are a ton of HD channels now and there are more planned before end of year. Like someone said though, some of them are premium channels like HBOHD, StarzHD, ShowtimeHD, CinemaxHD. I've had DirecTV for a while and don't have many complaints. Their installers are usually idiots, but DirecTV usually gives me a bunch of free stuff simply for asking. I got my new HD DVR absolutely free, along with the Sunday Ticket free this year.

Actually, Mexican fĂștbol matches in HD... but... er, those above would be good at 10:00 Sunday Morning, as well.
