My hard drive on my laptop completely failed yest. Much so that, it fails to boot up. I received a "Loading PBR for descriptor 2 message" I then took out the hard drive, after doing research on the net, and placed it in a external enclosure, it then proceeded to freeze up any computer i tried to attach it to. My question is, since simple data transfer will not work, does anyone know or have had an experience with data recovery, where you have to ship in your hd and they basically rebuild it? oh and the hd makes alot of noises, not the good kind i know its expensive but i have some very important docs that I need and that had yet to be backed up thanks in advance
I haven't ever done it with a laptop drive, but the freezer trick has worked a couple of times for my desktop drives and once on an external drive.
Yeah. I've had it work after 15 min a few times. 30 min to an hour is best. Get what you need most first. You may have to repeat the process a few times to get everything.
Instead of connecting the hd to a windows computer...boot up a computer using a live Linux cd like Knoppix and try to read the HD.
As fast as you can get it hooked up. The cold makes the metal parts contract, which makes the drive spin easier. The noise you hear is the parts wearing on each other, it should sound better when you power it back up. The warmer the drive gets the less time you have. Try the other solutions first. I didn't think it would work either, but I was able to save several gigs of data by doing this and I've had it work on 3 different drives.
You could hook the HDD up to the PC you are using now as a slave and see if you can read/get the data from it. That is what I had to do on my last crash. DD
My laptop HD failed twice.. the first time, I was able to put it up as a slave by connecting it to my desktop. Second time, it was done.. it almost booted up as a slave multiple times, but then wouldn't do it. Tried freezer trick for the first time.. no dice. Freezer again for a couple of hours... nothin. Waited about 30 mins (outside freezer now). Tried again..it worked! Got everything off in the order I needed it. About 10 mins after I got stuff off, it died forever.
when i use this linux cd, should I be using it as a boot cd on my laptop with my brick of a HD? or am i using my hd as a slave in my external enclosure to my desktop?
You will need to use some software like Nero to burn the linux ISO to a CD. Then it doesnt matter..you can leave the hd in your laptop and boot up using CD....or connect it to a desktop and boot up the desktop using the linux cd.
