james' game last night showed exactly how he became a 20 ppg scorer in toronto. he played lottery ball last night to earn more minutes. i don't really blame him. that's just what he is and what he'll give you. he should stay on the bench to fullfill this role, though.

If a dude is taking 17 shots in 27 minutes while he is on the floor with Yao and McGrady and both of those guys only get off 11 shots each......something ain't right.

I'm sorry, after thinking about it, the only thing MJ did right last night was hit the treys. He forced the action, which he shouldn't do, when 111 is out there. It's fine to force it a little when you are running with the 2nd unit. But the first two shots he took on that drive and miss then the putback miss, that was a forced, wasted possession and was symbolic of what was to come.

If you are gonna take 50% more shots than either McGrady or Yao when you are on the floor with both of them, you'd better be hitting those shots at a very efficient clip. 19 points on 17 shots is not efficient. And 111 and the rest of the starting unit suffered because of it. Yao was terrible, agreed. But he never got the ball with time to operate. McGrady coming off a blowup game against Seattle and he shoots 4 for 11??? Sorry, at least some of that is on Mike James. He took too many shots too early and did not get the ball to 111 to give them time to operate. And he did not move the basketball.

I'm an MJ fan. I really like the guy. I'm glad he's on the team. And I am convinced that his shooting and finishing will be a huge benefit to this team. But you gotta know the horses you are running with. I would be willing to bet.....he lost the opportunity to start at PG for this time during the regular season....at least for awhile....and maybe permanently unless Rafer really starts mucking it up out there.....which Rafer has not done.

You have to look at the offensive efficiency of the individual and the offensive efficiency of the whole unit while the player was in there. Our starters offensive efficiency has been off the charts with Rafer running the first unit. Last night.....the whole unit was terrible. What was different last night???? Sure wasn't the competition. They're scrubs.

You are right. Something is not right when the two $15 million men play like zombified pansies or pansified zombies. Fortunately it is preseason.

I knew it was coming. That cracked me up. :D

Mike James was all "To be honest with you, I'm gonna shoot, irregardless of how well TMac is playing."

I guess these guys didn't see Yao struggling or t-mac deferring to james on several occassions

How do you explain the fact that the offensive efficiency of the entire starting unit was down the tubes last night and the only change was Mike James????

    Wake up Sam.

So tell me how Rafer helps Battier make open shots that he was missing or prevents Luis Scola from turning the ball over or Yao being to lazy to hold his ground against stromile swift.

James played in the other games too you know in which the above players were not playing like ass - but you're saying it was because of Rafer's magic value added that Yao decides to mail the game in?

Actually it was because of Mike James very clever distribution talents and deferring to other team members that got us to overtime in the first place. Then of course Yao decides to mail the game in mainly because James throws the Rock into Yao in the post every time. Yep that is why Yao sucked and so did Battier. I guess cause James has his timing down so precisely in this offense that he makes his teammates better with his crisp passing and his teammates flashing to the hole. I really liked Mike James's ability to shoot the rock scoring 19 points on 17 shots. Very very good. Now if only he can do that each and every game. We will win the title for sure. I hope he takes over T-Macs starting position.

This is a pointless poll. I really don't see any purpose in it other then to stir up what is going on in half of the threads already on the board.

For one, calling Yao and TMac zombified pansies is lame (I know you said they played like it). Look our team in general played like crap. I personally don't have a problem with what James did last night either. I think people need to accept a lot of guys on our team for what they are. James is a scorer. That shooting last night will be valuable coming off the bench and if he's hot. If he starts doing that in the minutes he's given with Yao and TMac on the court during the regular season Adelman will stop it immediately. It was just a preseason game. I would like to see him pass the ball and create but I'm satisfied with having a scorer like James off the bench. It gives us depth and if he could improve his shot selection and take shots in the offense I'm pretty sure his field goal percentage will be much higher (like he will during the season).

Anyways, it's preseason. I actually thought Francis was ok last night. He has lost whatever defense he had though. Nobody really played defense but Francis's stood out more because he was in there during crunch time. He also has a sore knee and was probably tired so who knows. I liked what I saw out of Landry. Head played pretty well too. I think the James bashing is unwarranted as I do the Rafer and Francis bashing. I think way too much of this is based on past views of each player. This is a completely new system. It doesn't matter what you saw in the past. Everyone has a favorite and that's fine, so is criticism but does every thread have to turn into a Francis, James, Rafer battle. Starting polls like this doesn't help things either

You accusing Yao of mailing it in is ridiculous. Yao is the first to every practice and the last to leave. He doesn't mail it in. If you want to say he had an off night, ok, agreed. That's far different from mailing it in.

When Yao is unable to establish post position on hardworking defensive stalwart Stromile Swift - the problem is not with the guards.

Fine then we can come up with a euphemism - how about an "AWW SHUCKS!!" night, or an "Old School Yao!" night or a "Boozer wants it more!"night.

Ok dude. You seem to enjoy stirring the pot so I'll let you do it with someone else. Yao played a bad game last night. He was clearly off. There's plenty of negatives things to say about how he played. However, since every single player in the NBA has bad games are they all mailing it in also every night? Yao's not that type of player or person. If you're a Rockets fan you should know that.

Very simple. Rafer was not the fit in the JVG system. I would have preferred to have Mike James in there. Strong head coach, he wouldn't put up with .... from James, he would have forced MJ to defer, and he would have had MJ out there canning treys, which is Van Gundy's system.

Adelman's offense is not an offense where you got 3 guys standing around waiting for the shot, nor is it an offense designed to get the point guards the 3rd most shots behind 111...................................much less more shots than 111. Adelman's offense is predicated on throwing the ball around and guys running around without the ball. Mike James ain't good at it. He's good at dribbling and shooting and he's good at catching and shooting. But he lacks the discipline and trust to get rid of the ball without dribbling and seeing what he can create for himself. He lacks the discipline to pass first.

He'll be good playing off the bench with the scrubs when 111 is sitting and we need someone to create offense. But unless he learns to throw it around a little, he will make our first unit way less efficient, as was clearly on display last night.

I think you just have to make sense out of what fits and what doesn't. Last year, before the season began, I envisioned Rafer was going to be used as a distributor to create shots/layups for 111. But JVG didn't use him that way. It was obvious to me, a previous Rafer supporter, that it wasn't going to work with Rafer and our guard play would be our Achilles heal come playoff time because of Rafer's poor shooting/finishing and Luther's lack of size, getting abused defensively. But this year is a different year, different coach, different offensive system. We are gonna need James to come in and play defense on guys that are taking Rafer to school and to hit shots when the better defenses in this league start funneling the shots to Rafer's position. But, in the meantime, we need Rafer to distribute and get the ball to 111 and company cuz James lacks the discipline and trust to give up the bball early and he hangs onto it too durn long in this system predicated on ball movement and player movement.

Still no decent explanation on why our offensive efficiency was down the tubes.......

besides the foolhardy "Yao mailed it in".

    see below
Either Yao didn't try very hard (mailed it in) or he is a bad player. If you're going to tell me he just "had an off night", you are doing a good job of answering your first question.

Let me tell you gentlemen a story, hearken back to the days of yesteryear.

It's a night in the spring of 2007. A sluggish Yao is getting fronted, doubled, and fumbling balls away, getting shoved around by mediocre players, and is in full scale "hit myself in the head when i do bad!" mode. Tracy "it's on me" is looking disinterested, and not attacking the rim but settling for jumpers. Shane Battier is invisible and can't buy a basket. Juwan Howard & Chuck Hayes are mounting nothing and turning the ball over to boot. Luther Head is stuck in neutral.

Your solution to this scenario is to have Rafer Alston at the stick - and Rafer's solution to this problem would be something in the nature of 4 for 15 performance, 2 for 9 from three point range We know this, because this is what happened in the past. You call this "making his teammates better"

I'd take James going 7 for 17 and putting up 19 points and keeping the team in the game. I call this "making his team better".

    Different strokes for different folks.

I'm pretty sure it's a cleverly disguised racist poll.
