[Texans] Do We REALLY Need to Establish the Run?

The common denominator between when the running game was working and when it wasn't was McKinney. Everything changed when he went down. Now, it doesn't matter when or how we try to run. We've gotten the passing game working and Schaub completes 5 or 6 passes in a row and then we throw in a run and it gets stuffed at the line like usual. The defense doesn't have to look for the run in order to stop it. That's how bad it is. They can just expect pass on every play and react to the run and we're still not going to get any yards.

No, we really shouldn't spend a lot of time trying to establish the run because we know we can't establish the run. It's a futile effort. It doesn't get us yards and it doesn't open up the pass. Running into a brick wall does no good. We have the 2nd lowest ypg average (75.6) and the lowest ypc (3.1) in the NFL.

The ONLY benefit is that it may make the play action pass more effective. If they know we're still going to run the ball even if it's repeatedly stuffed, then they have to respect the play fake, even a little.

But overall, you can't establish something you're incapable of establishing.

You are exactly right and I'm glad you started this thread. There is no way these guys can get the running game going to set up the pass. They should come out slinging, it should be obvious by now that we can't run block effectively, and we can't protect the QB's blindside. We should come out slinging to the left side of the field, even start the game with a screen pass to the left to keep the defense honest as much as possible over there. Then continue to sling it around until we force the defense out of the box. I'm tired of our running game getting shut down and then us getting in a hole we have to try to scratch and claw out of. Make the adjustment already.

I absolutely abhor the sideways passing offense (especially when UT employs it), but this might be a situation where it's actually useful. Instead of running for 2 yards into a pile of defenders, why not throw sideways and try to gain 3 or 4 easy yards that way? It's worth a shot at least.

The idea to run is to keep the defense honest so they cant just pin their ears back and come after the qb every play. I also think that when Andre comes back they will help the rb some because the defense will have to account for him and cant put 8 in the box. However, the oline had got to play better and I for one dont want to put Schaub in there against the chargers if he is not 100%. The texans have invested too much money on him to put him out there hobbled against that pass rush. Sage just might have to take one for the team this week.

did none of you watch this team from 2002-2006?!?!... when you can't effectively run the football OR pass block, it's a receipe for ruining your QB. it would be yesterday's first half for 16 straight weeks.

Well, to do that would require that some folks would have to take a much more realistic view of this team and that's probably asking too much. It's far easier (and not mention more convenient) to blame pretty David.

I know...David has clearly shown he's an all-star elsewhere. And the Texans aren't any better on offense with a replacement for him.

Give me a break. I thought all the Carr defenders died already.

This team is mediocre at best--and it's not looking that good right now.

David was far from the only problem. But he was clearly (in hindsight) the offense's biggest problem. Whether he was never going to cut it in the NFL or whether his story would be a lot different had he started elsewhere, in the end he was the offense's biggest problem.

West coast offense is the DEVIL. Go Paterno! Go defense! Go special teams! Go run plays! Yes! Run run run! Or you'll be well-done!

He wasn't provided the correct type of gloves while in Houston.

Amazing that Sage came in the game and lit up one of the top defensive units in the NFL.

    Again...

Dude, Tennessee took its foot off the gas and couldn't get it back on. Did you also see that we ran better later?

The Texans don't have anything remotely resembling Manning or Brady.. so yes, they need to establish the run.

When brady won his first super bowl he was a mediocre player, but he still made big plays when it counted. Texans should pass because they are good at it.

First of all, Brady was never a mediocre player.. yes it was the first season he was starting, but he didn't get magical powers bestowed upon him. Secondly, do you have an extremely short term memory. That Patriots team didn't win games by passing 60 times a game.

Plus, the argument was that THIS year's Patriots set up the run with the pass. And that's because they have Brady. The Texans, once again, have nothing even closely resembling Brady or Manning. They need to be able to run the ball to have a well-rounded offense, bottom line.

I think Sage's intangibles took the Titans foot off the gas -- all the guy does is produce.

So, Sage contributed to 5 failed drives in which he had 2 INT's, a fumble, and no first downs, but all of a sudden when Tennessee goes up by 25 he becomes Superman? That's some VY sh*t right there.
