    We've gone through this in past seasons. Before the year starts, a lot of people talking about how the team has the potential to compete for the championship. When the season ends without a ring, people start talking about they never thought the team were a true contender, even if they had a decent year, and should have given time to develop the youth even at the cost of possibly winning fewer games because the wins don't mean a thing unless you get the ring.

    The current team is stacked with experienced guys like McGrady, Yao, Francis, Battier, Alston, James, Wells, Mutombo. Head, Hayes, and Scola are less experienced, but likely are capable performers who can contribute and don't need "development minutes. You can go plenty deep with these likely regular. There are, however, some young guys who are on the squad for the future.

    In your opinion, are the current Rockets a true championship contender in the "win now" mode?

    Or are they not championship caliber and should give minutes developing Brooks, Landry, Novak, Harris, Butler (whoever is left on the roster after the cut)? Should they ship/cut one of the vets to make roster room and minutes for the youth if they are not a true contender?

    Please make your choice now so we can revisit it if/when people second guess the minutes distribution.

    Last year, esp. with JVG...it was win now...win now...win at all cost. Even though, I don't think team really could win now with talent at hand. While management was sort of setting up future looking towards drafting Roy and Gay, bringing over V-Span, trading and releasing alot of older players during the season (the season we didn't make the playoffs).

    Now, I think with Morey as the general manager, we still have win now mentality, mainly because T-Mac and Yao and the recent FA acquistions, but the team also seems to be in development mode, too. We've drafted and kept alot of our draft picks or haven't really tried to trade anyone.

    I could see Head, Brooks, Harris (maybe), Scola (import), Hayes (undrafted), and possibly future draft choices as starters in the next 5 to 7 years. While, I think Bonzi, Francis, and James are only temporary...1 to 3 seasons tops.

    I could see us going after a big free agent after either T-Mac or Yao are on their way out of the dooor.

    I don't think it's bad mentality to have, because I think having both will keep the team competitive for at least another 10 years.

    Woah guys, hold on, I think it is a valid question.

    The last few years, I have been in the "win as many as you can but develop for the future" camp.

    I thought the team was talented but not quite as good as the top teams, and thus were not real championship contenders.

    Sure, they were a playoff team, but I just felt there were too many holes in the overall team to truly win it all, which is one of the main reasons I wanted V-Span to be developed.

    However, this year, I am in the "Win it all" camp. I believe there is enough talent up and down the roster to TRULY compete for a championship.

    So, if a Rockets young player (Brooks, Landry, Novak) makes the team and needs to develop, they should do it in the NBDL.

    With all the weapons on this squad, we are definitely in win now mode! Especially considering the potential that Luis Scola brings to what was our biggest whole in seasons past. And since with have better than average back ups for Rafer, we definitely need to be in win now mode. I have to admit that management has done and excellent job this past season. And Houston is a place where free agents are definitely going to look at with Yao, Mac, and Scola at such a young age. We should be entering our championship years.

    Even though hes replying in CAPS, I'm going to have to agree. What talents are there to develop? Novak and Landry, two second rounders who probably won't even be in the NBA in the next 3 years, hell both of them could be out of the NBA at the end of month. Or you mean develop brooks so we can have him replace tmac as our primary scorer by next year?

    Have you had your medication today, sir? :p

    There seems to be an excessive amount of hostility in this post and I can't seem to figure out why.

    As for Win Now or Develop Now, I'm in the "Win Now" camp. There's no sense in bringing back Steve, MJ or having a glue guy like Shane if all the Rockets are doing is waiting for Aaron Brooks or Mike Harris to suddenly blossom into superstars.

    This really is the dumbest thread ever.

    Other than Brooks, every other player under 25 is 12th man bench fodder. Who are you developing?

    It's not as though we have an 18 year old Kobe Bryant.

    "listen guys, we'll be championship contenders BECAUSE we play brilliant rookies like spanoulis or white guys or duke guys!! Best of both worlds is possible if they just follow my advice which changes every 4 seconds and is completely contradictory trust me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    The point of the thread is to preemptively mock the people who if we're struggling mid-season will say "We should play Brooks/Novak/Snyder".

    uhh...

    We have no one to develop. Brooks, Landry, Butler, Novak. :confused: :confused: :confused:

    Pretty pointless thread. Would be a different question if we actually had talent to develop.... but we dont...

    My guess is that the thread starter is thinking that the following is possible

    Novak = Larry Bird
    Landry = Larry Johnson
    Brooks = Isiah Thomas

    Otherwise I see no point in this question.
