Personally, I would just buy one from a store. I don't know crap about building computers but I would definitely want some type of warranty or service plan when buying computers.

I built our home computer about 4 or 5 years ago and it was really tough to save any money. I had to shop VERY carefully and wait for the right parts to hit the right prices. In then end, I probably saved less than $100.

I've built computers several times in the past and I've never bought a pre-made computer... but the next computer I buy will probably be pre-built. The savings just aren't there any more.

If you're after a cheap PC, buy one from a store.... If you want high performance for less money, you can do better putting it together yourself.

generally if you are putting a high end pc together you will save money building yourself (talking about 2-3 grand here) or if you just want something custom built to a specifc need.

but if you just want a good computer and assuming you do your mixing as a hobby rather than a profession than you are better off getting a HP/DELL/GATEWAY prebuilt computer. They build so many that their prices are usually a lot cheaper. The one problem is how upgradable the pcs could be. I remember a few HPs 2 years ago had no VGA slot to add in a graphics card it was just onboard and had only 2 RAM slots.

if you have a friend who knows enough about computers taken him/her with you to the store and if you see something you like on the floor ask the sales rep if you could take a look inside at the motherboard and see what features the board has.

For Video Editing - go Mac. Just trust me on this one. There is an Apple store in the Galleria, Baybrrok and Memorial City Malls. Students and some major corps get discounts for their employees.
