Saw that. I defrag'ed it a few weeks ago. Anyone know an answer to my router question and the firewall? Thanks again everyone
And I'm still trying to find out if my laptop is fried. To anyone who may be able to help, read my post earlier in the thread. Crap. Maybe I should have started my own thread.
Dude. Dude. Please follow my advice. STOP McAfee first. DON'T uninstall it. What I was saying is to figure out if THAT is the problem first. Not in the McAfee controls... in the Programs->Administrative Tools->Services... there, you can find all McAfee services and turn them off and on manually or on startup.
well, I already uninstalled it and installed a AVG and the problem is solved. I appeciate your help, though. I figured I could always reinstall McAfee if it didn't fix the problem. AVG also found 2 viruses that McAfee had not located. Hopefully this works permanently. Now all I need is a firewall
the version you have of mcafee is so intrusive. The enterprise edition is better than the home version in my opinion but obviously it would be a tad harder to get your hands on that one. Looks likeyou had mcafee 10 home? That thing was a pain.
I'd used the Zone Alarm before and never had a problem with it. AVG is probably a good choice. I'm using a Mac now so it's been a while since I bothered with it, but on my last PC I was using AVG and it was considered pretty solid.
It might be a virus spreading around. My girlfriend's laptop became really slow yesterday. We tried to scan for virus with Norton, but the scan can't be complete for some reason (maybe a virus blocking the scan). Now we are trying to boot to safe mode and try to scan from there. I'll keep you updated.
a cheap router firewall is comparable to native windows firewall that shipped with SP2, you cannot set application permission and you cannot monitor outbound traffic if you are in fact infected by a virus or trojan, it always better to have a personal firewall around... a good router should have filter setup, DoS defense, URL content filter and web content filter and QOS for bandwidth control....otherwise it is just a NAT gateway
