Number crunchers
Rockets coach Rick Adelman said he would not begin to put players together in likely regular-season combinations until the third preseason game, Oct. 18, at the earliest. He did say it is difficult working with 19 players.

"We have so many guys, it's hard in practice to get anything done," Adelman said of building on-court chemistry. "I think it is easier to split them up and have two teams of eight to nine guys and play like it's games."

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said there are no plans to make cuts until the Oct. 26 deadline.

"It's the deadline," Morey said. "That's the timetable. You need to give everyone a full chance to make it, I think. There is interest in the players. Obviously, we have to get down to 15.

"The best scenario would be if we could move them. There's interest in some of the players that might not make it. We're likely not going to be able to move all of them, so there's going to be some tough (decisions) at the end. We're not sure how it's going to play out. We need to give the players the time to show us what they can do, and us as long as we can to reconcile the roster."

With no set plays and no Yao Ming or Tracy McGrady in the second half, the Rockets' offense struggled badly Tuesday.

But coach Rick Adelman saw enough to believe the Rockets' loss demonstrated what can be, and must be, done.

"We're going to be able to do it," he said. "We've really only just put in motion stuff. They just have to make reads. We're pretty comfortable that Yao and our two forwards (Luis Scola and Chuck Hayes) can pass the ball. (The Hornets) did some things that our forwards are going to have to look at and understand you have to make different passes and better passes. There's a lot of things out there we know we can do with this group."

I said in another thread that we probably wouldn't have an idea of who's on the bubble until the third preseason game, and looks like I was right. One game and training camp is just too early to say for sure who's in and who's out.
