Athanasia "Ethel" Eliopoulos, 94, died Friday, October 5, 2007, at D'Youville Manor. Ethel was born on Feb. 10, 1913, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of the late Elias and Eleni (Mangiavas) Eliopoulos. She graduated from Lowell High School, and attended Boston University before leaving to pursue a professional working career. She received formal training as a stenographer, was an expert in shorthand, and a licensed Real Estate Broker before becoming the first woman in the United States to hold the position of local Director of Social Security in a district office. After serving nearly 50 years in various capacities, Ethel enjoyed a long and illustrious career and was considered a pioneer in the field of Social Security. She was the recipient of many awards within the Greek community as well as one of the first women to receive the John J. Bartlett Award, this prestigious award is given for extraordinary service within a United States governmental program. This award is extremely rare as under one-half of just one percent of government employees ever receive it. During her working years Ethel appeared regularly on Saturday morning local radio and was involved in a Question and Answer column that appeared periodically in the Lowell Sun Newspaper. She also co-wrote, directed and starred in a short tutorial film that was used in training for Social Security start up offices. Ethel traveled extensively throughout her life having visited many countries including but not limited to China, Greece, Ireland and Turkey as well as numerous locations throughout the United States. She particularly enjoyed Sannibel Island, Florida. Upon retiring from Social Security, with little to no respite she quickly returned to work in the private sector working with her niece buying and selling antiques in an Essex, Mass., Antiques shop. She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Hollis and Bessie Natsios of Lowell; and a brother, Peter Eliopoulos of Palm Bay, Florida. Her many nieces and nephews will miss their long tradition of celebrating Christmas Eve together. The family is grateful for her countless friends, and the wonderful care she received at D'Youville Manor. With her passing, Ethel's final wish was ultimately granted when she did not have to see Hillary Clinton become president. ELIOPOULOS Friends will be received at the M.R. LAURIN FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St., Lowell on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral will take place on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Funeral Home to be followed by services at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell at 10 a.m. Interment to follow in Westlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Holy Trinity Church, Lewis St., Lowell, MA 01854. Funeral arrangements under direction of Louis M. Fazio III, M. Richard Laurin, Scott Laurin.[/rquoter]
Too bad. She had until January 2009 before she would have had to commit suicide. She could have gotten more pub out of it too... "Granny blows head off with shotgun." Think of the possibilities... you guys could blame Hillary for killing Americans before she even took the oath. Might have blunted some of that whole Iraq War thing. Oh well. I also find it interesting that you question people who think the country might not be living up to their ideals and think about going to another country, but you offer praise for someone who would rather die then see a member of the opposite party take office. Telling on all counts and the story just reinforces the idea that the right-wing in this country is now completely nuts.
it's not a "story", it's an obit- and you're an ass. fyi, i never thought, before tonight, that you were such a humorless dick. my bad.
How terrible that someone would call your obit a "story." I can't think of anything so offensive that anyone's ever done to a fellow poster here. It's almost like he called you a traitor to your country. Or said you loved it when Americans died. Or said you loved nothing better than the killing of unborn babies. But much, much worse. What a dick. And worse, to YOU! Our most humorful poster!! Alas!
Please. It became a story when the family inserted that sentence. It became a story when right-wing blogs linked to it. It became a story when you posted it. Just like Wellstone's funeral became a story after the right-wing hacks started to slam it, only different. Difference for you guys is that Ethel's death serves a different propaganda purpose and we're not supposed to react like you guys did with Wellstone. Well, welcome to the world you helped create. The difference to me is that Wellstone's service celebrated what he believed and the democracy he was a part of... and was messy in the sense that democracy is messy... and entirely appropriate for an elected official like Wellstone. On the other hand, Ethel's family says she would rather literally die then have a member of the other party as President. (If that's what's celebrated in the party of life, more power to you.)
This new loophole is pretty cool. I'm going to wait for distant relatives to die and insert all sorts of nasty comments about what basso and giddyup like to do to little children and sheep and because it is an obit they'll have to agree or relegate themselves to ass-hood or spindoctor-hood respectively. When this article was posted I genuinely didn't see where it was going. Now that it has played out, I can honestly say that I wouldn't in 1,000,000 years believe that people were so crass as to use this poor lady's death as a lead blocker in their political football game. People every day die who are liberal and conservative and facist and communists and every other political viewpoint under the sun. I am sad for you people that you would think this woman's death is an appropriate vehicle. I don't think I've ever said this in my entire life and I feel a bit goofy actually saying it, but do you people have no shame?
actually, i just posted it because i thought it was funny. the reactions are a bit over the top, particularly the the wellstone comparison, which is just off the charts.
I would rather die before my children but that doesn't mean I want to die... You're a parent; would you rather have your children die first? Of course not. That's the kind of cockamamy (SP?) logic you are applying here. It was probably a family joke that the family wanted to share. It's a bit out of place but I doubt it's her Republican daughter who put the obituary together and is now "getting the treatment" from the rest of the family.
At least they didn't call her a ****... <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KTV1xtcUD0o"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KTV1xtcUD0o" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
