[rquoter]Rep. Henry Waxman has asked his investigative staff to begin compiling reports on Limbaugh, and fellow radio hosts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin based on transcripts from their shows, and to call in Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin to discuss the so-called "Fairness Doctrine."

"Limbaugh isn't the only one who needs to be made uncomfortable about what he says on the radio," says a House leadership source. "We don't have as big a megaphone as these guys, but this all political, and we'll do what we can to gain the advantage. If we can take them off their game for a while, it will help our folks out there on the campaign trail."[/rquoter]

Not saying one way or the other, but which party started this whole thing? I say let them all say what they want, Limbaugh, move on, etc.

Let the talkies have their say. No need to regulate their exercise of free speech. It reminds me of when the GOP was trying to cause problems at PBS.

Yeah, I don't agree with much that those blowhards say, but they have every right to say it.

Silly basso. Democrats will not have regulatory power until 2009. Congress' investigative and oversight function is something else.

it's not a huge leap from this to congress investigating political speech on blogs, or, a basketball bulletin board.

Legally it's an extremely huge leap, given that Congress =/ the FCC, and that the FCC doesn't regulate blogs because they aren't part of public airwaves. This part of the law has been around a long time (and has been discussed pretty frequently on this BBS). The rules for content regulation on public airwaves hae always been differnent. That is why they show nekkid ladies on cable but the same results in huge fines when on broadcast.

You're worried about intrusive government now? That is freaking hilarious.

i'm worried about using the powers of government to suppress dissenting political views in public forums. i'd think you would be as well.

No, you're not. You haven't said word one about the current administration doing exactly that, in unprecedented fashion, for years except to defend it. You're only worried about how it will go when your party is finally, thankfully, out of power.

a bit off topic, but you have to admit that this democratic congress is absolutely a joke. my politics tend to be right in the middle and I cannot stand the bush admin and was pumped about unseating the republican majority, but the democrats have just been awful. the whole system is a joke.

I think you have to draw a line between what the Dem Congress has tried to do but failed (by virtue of lacking a veto proof majority and clear indication that everything they pass of note will be vetoed) and what they've failed to even try. For all the complaining about Dem filibusters by the previous Congress (remember the nuclear option?), this is the most obstructionist Congressional minority maybe ever. I wish Congressional Dems would do every single thing in their power to end the war, etc. and I wish they'd be less careful about how it might hurt them in the future, but it's hard to blame them for not accomplishing more when the minority party has promised to obstruct, obstruct, obstruct -- and have even gone public with that strategy -- and the president has promised to back them up with vetoes.

that's true to an extent, but they also seem to have no direction and have accomplished very little, which to me is the bottom line.

sorry for derailing the thread, but they have been the biggest disappointment since our president (but not nearly as bad as he has been)

Blake, what exactly did you expect the Democrats to do? Have you ever heard them articulate a strategy? Have you ever heard them lay out a plan? No, of course you have not. All they are good at is empty, destructive criticism, undermining the morale of the troops, creating a deep partisan divide in America, and fostering a sense of America the putrid. When your talking points line up almost identically to Mahmoud Ahmadinajad, you know that you have descended to the depths of lunacy. The liberals getting things done? HA! They are too busy COMPLAINING and trying to convince everyone how bad off they have it.

Just because someone has policy ideas.... doesn't mean they're good ideas. A lot of times no idea is preferable to bad ideas. I could cause Godwin's Law to be invoked yet again, but I won't.

See, but you are totally biased :p . The reason why they even won the majority back is because of the terrible job that the republicans did. I thought it might be an improvement, but so far, it has not been. Just frustrates me (both sides).

Anyways, back to the original topic. I do enjoy lurking in here and reading, though, and I will do my best to post my thoughts in the proper threads :D

There are a lot of people out there like you.

The polls bear out that the Congress' very low approval ratings are due to disappointment with the Democrats in both houses failure to aggressively confront the Bush Administration. A majority of Independents and Democrats want more opposition to Bush policies, not less.

Of course, Republicans and media Talking Heads will say that the low #s are because the Democrats have been too "partisan". That is bs.
