Hear me out: Snyder, Novak, Reed to Miami for Doleac, Daquean Cook, 1st rounder. Doleac gets waived so that the Heat can resign him for the min. Miami needs bodies, Wade is out until end of November and Li'l Penny does not look good at camp. Riley is not going to play Cook, because, well he is Pat Riley (where do you think JVG learned his tricks) So the Heat gets a player in Snyder who's been around and is more compliant than Cook, plus a potential replacement for Kapono in Novak, plus and extra body in Reed. Then they can re-sign Doleac. They give up potentially slightly better talent than Snyder (Cook) and a first rounder, so in efferct they trade future for present. The Rockets trim their roster, get some upside potential, and also could get payroll relief, as when they release Doleac his new deal with Miami (for vet min.) offsets their obligation. (The only thing is, I believe there was something about an "Alan Henderson" rule, where the League was trying to crack down on this type of deals... I don't recall what the proposed restriction was...)
Snyder is a one year rental with no bird rights if traded. He's been on a different in each season he's played. Miami won't be able re-sign Doleac. There's a waiting period that's far too long a wait. More realistic options are: *Sending either Reed or Butler to Charlotte as they have enough cap space. *Sending JLIII to the Spurs http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3049252 Spurs have a 992k TE, JLIII's contract is 770k Here are the teams under LT with TE's: Cavs, 2.09M Piston, 1.03M GSW, 9.99M +2.13M Sonics, 1.25M + 1.75M Raptors, 555k
You guys totally overestimate the value of late first rounders. Remember, Snyder was also a first-rounder (#15) and now has years of experience... At this point D. Cook is mostly a crapshot. The future Miami first-rounder also figures to be past 20, so who knows what you gonna get there... Wake up guys, the is summer over, draft picks only look exciting during the offseason. A couple of months ago Greg Oden looked like the next coming of Christ and Aaron Brooks was playing against J.Kidd and Deron and everyone was so excited... Now it turns out that Oden's freakishly uneven legs have totally screwed up his knee joints and Brooks gets as much mention in camp as JLIII...
If I was an owner and I liked some of the Rockets scrubs/ possible backups I would wait to see who they cut. Knowing we are like 6 guys over the max 15. More than likely you will get them cheaper than what the Rockets are paying for that particular player.
The Rockets traded cash and a conditional swap of a second round pick to get Snyder... and he's done virtually nothing since then. His value is not that of a first round pick. Neither is Novak's. If I'm not mistaken, Reed has a player option next summer... you're probably lucky if you find a home for him.
Still, Snyder is competent. I bet if he ends up on a team that is not as loaded as we are at the guard spots, he would contribute a lot more this season than D. Cook. The guy has talent, what hurt his value in the past was that he butted heads with J.Sloan and then with Byron Scott, and then JVG mostly played only one backup guard (Head)... Maybe sub a 2nd rounder for the first rounder in my original proposal and the deal looks realistic. Novak has the potential to fit in Miami's system as well as Kapono, he has more value for that team than what his open market value would be. It is true that Reed has two years at $1.5M or so, but he is not tragic. The Heat have a single sub at F (Simien) and he has been injury-prone. If they get Novak and Reed for front-court help, their salaries are decent for what you would pay second/third forward off-the bench...
Cook>Snyder but you had to go and include Novak. If there's one thing Coach A won't do is trade Novak before he even see's him play in a real game. Can you say Peja??
There are several reasons why your trade makes no sense. Miami has 15 players under contract. You expect them to trade their first round pick with a very reasonable contract for three mediocre players who make a lot more then he does. Forget about whatever you think Cook will be, but why would Miami add three contracts (Reed, Novak, Snyder) and only give up one (Cook). So they would have 17 signed players, and go over the tax, for three guys who may barely get minutes? Miami needs a PG in case the Smush Parker/Jason Williams duo stinks. Yet, you dont even add in one of our 5 PGs in this trade. You also expect Miami to give up a first round pick in the trade? Im not sure why you think first round picks are not valuable. They can be packaged to get you a good player, or net you a player of value overseas (ie Fernandez in Portland this year). A college player picked in the late first round with potential is far more desireable then a former first round or early second round pick who has done nothing in the NBA after a couple years (Snyder and Novak). Lastly, everyone knows Houston will have to make some cuts due to so many contracts being on the team. Why would anyone give anything of value now to secure players who they might be able to get for free in a couple weeks.
Synder and Novak can be rotation pieces! Let's make life simple and... Waive Bob Sura Send JL III/Reed/Harris PACKING Make a deal for Rafer Alston (probably cant do that anymore)
Miami's contracts are mostly non-guaranteed. These are training camp contracts. All of our players Novak, Snyder, Reed are better than their training camp invitees. You may be like first rounders better than players with experience if you are rebuilding, which Miami is not. That's the whole thing, D. Cook may have a higher ceiling than Snyder (that's why the Rockets would take him), but at this point he is not as good as Snyder. Miami wants to win now. Being 19-20 years old, and already having been criticized that he left too early, I just don't see Riley going to camp an saying to himself "this guy is gonna play". If he wants to sacrifice him for a player more ready to produce, he won't find a better offer than Kirk Snyder... Then you have Novak, who could be a very good piece in their system (a la Kapono last year). They may wait for us to cut him, but we may decide to cut somebody else, how do you know. If we cut Butler, Miami is not going to go after him... Then you have Reed, who is mediocre but not tragic. He is a better 10th guy than what they have now, plus Simien is often hurt...
That sounds more reasonable. With Sean May being out for a long time, Charlotte might want an extra big body around. They might just move Okafor back to PF and start Brezec at center though...
