Avery is number one on my all time hated players list, even more than Stockton and Malone...one of the most notorious Rockets killers ever

i know, it just sounded better that way. point is that somebody is complaining that the spurs won a championship in 99 when there were a lot better than every other team in the association. it's as legit as they get. they were rated eighth best of all time by hollinger .

I don't think he deserves to have his number retired at all. If Avery Johnson is worthy of having his jersey retired then we should be retiring Kenny Smith, Mario Elie, Robert Horry (once he retires), and possibly Otis Thorpe and Sam Cassell (once he retires). And you know, as much as I love those guys, none of them deserve to have their jerseys retired.

i'm far from the "overly sensitive" type, but that comment does sound straight up racist. how the hell else do you mean it???

if it were don amaechi and you said

"montrose should retire his number as well. freakin f*****" BUT

not in a racist way for you overly sensitive people

    would that be cool too?

that's far from being overly sensitive. i think you need some cultural enlightenment...especially concerning the black race.

from the talk shows here, most are in full support of his number being retired, but are puzzled as to the timing of it, as well. he is their all-time assist leader, undisputed leader of the championship team (and teams prior), and a huge fan favorite. still, he coaches their enemy now, and they aren't real pleased with him right now.

    as an aside...

you should have heard the uproar when manu ginobili first came to the spurs. he was planning on wearing #6 (avery's #) and the spurs had already ok'd it. the presser was scheduled and everything, but spurs fans got wind of it and went berserk! talk show lines were lit up over manu wanting avery's beloved number, so they pulled it, gave manu his current #, and now here we are today...

This is, I assumed and now really hope, a reference to the Jim Rome show.

Avery played 7 seasons as a Spur and averaged 10.5 ppg, 7 apg, 2 rpg, 1 spg with a good overall shooting percentage (usually around 47%), horrible 3%, and below average FT % (career he is about 8.5 ppg and 5.5 apg). It is absurd for him to have his number retired based on his basketball skills. I guess he goes up to the rafters for "intangibles".

Why does it matter what numbers the Spurs decide to retire?

    yes.

    james silas
    george gervin
    johnny moore
    david robinson
    sean elliot

silas was a good player with the spurs. he would have had more impact in the nba if he had the kind of medical attention they have now for knee injuries.

moore and elliot were both good, but not retirement material on the court. they were fan favorites.

IMHO Sean Elliot deserves more that honor than Avery Johnson

I liked how Sean Elliot played.

I mean he looks like a monkey. Not because he is black, or white or purple. But because he looks like a monkey.

Oh, Shanghai Sharks also retired Yao's number, after he was drafted by NBA in 2002.

He was in 21 - 22 yrs old at that time, won one championship for his team. But I don't think he warrants that No. either.

Does this even matter. F the spurs and whatever they decide to do.
I cant believe we're having a debate on the worthiness of avery's # being retired by the spurs. Why the f&*% should we care.
