I am pretty sure you lose your American citizenship if you apply to be a citizen of another country?

Nope, the US allows for dual citizenship. Usually its the other country that isn't cool with it. But the EU allows dual citizenship as well so it should work out.

If you feel that strongly about it maybe you should just renounce your US citizenship when you get your German papers.

Why would he do that? A lot of Americans have dual citizenship.

C'mon, mcmark. It isn't that he has/will have dual citizenship. It's his opinion that the US is a lost cause (too far down the rabid hole), that we don't have a democracy (two party joke), and that our citizenry has no morality. Those aren't comments of contructive criticism but of someone who has given up (if he ever had a stake in the country to begin with) and has sought another country's citizenship as a fall back (Thankfully (for me), I am just a few weeks from dual citizenship. You gotta have a backup plan - especially when the writing is on the wall) to 'save' himself. I say good riddance.

Well there are a lot of people who feel that the US has lost its way in the world. Did you ever think you would live to see torture being condoned or widespread illegal wiretapping of citizens or voter suppression or the suspension of habeas corpus?

You can see where some people would be concerned for America

And there is a difference between criticizing what you don't like to affect a change and giving up and seeking 'safe harbor' in some other country. The ultimate irony is that he may be going to a country where the surveillance restrictions are less than those we enjoy and where the current climate is pushing a move to even more draconian restrictions.

"Sensing a growing threat, Germany’s top security official, Wolfgang Schäuble, is breaking down resistance within the government to surreptitious online searches of computers belonging to people they deem suspicious. He is pushing for a law to allow security forces to shoot down a plane commandeered by hijackers. And he said this week that Germany should consider detaining potential terrorists and approving the killing of terrorist leaders abroad." NYT

I think you should push for laws that force people to renounce their US citizenship if they voluntarily obtain another citizenship. The Chinese commies already have laws like that now.

and just maybe people should have the freedom to pursue anything they like as long as they are not infringing on others.

He does have that freedom. And? I didn't advocate he give up any freedom, rather that he exercise his choice.
