I came across this gem today, and I never realized that the NBA had an official HORSE contest. How cool would that be as a part of All-Star Weekend? Can you imagine Nash and Kobe going head-to-head in HORSE?

Apparently Bill Simmons wrote a column about it, and other than inexplicably dissing Heather Locklear, he's dead on.

Pistol Pete, rest in peace. He was one of the greatest that ever played.

Not taking anything away from Pistol Pete ... but that was kinda lame. Maybe b/c I was expecting more - but that competition was disappointing.

They should replace the skills competition with HORSE.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind HORSE coming back, but only if it replaced the WNBA crap during all star weekend...

not so much based on that video, but the pistol was so far ahead of his time it is unbelievable. to this day, i have never seen a guard with his unique array of offensive moves, ballhandling ability, and court vision. j-dub was/is a terrible facsimile of the pistol and he was beyond the players he played against (ballhandling wise).

if you ever get a chance to see the pistol on nba tv, watch it. you will not regret it.

It'll never be a part of the modern All-Star weekend. Why? Because it requires too much skill, and 99.99% of the players playing today would rather show off their dunking than show their lack of ball-handling and accurate shooting.

And those that could do a contest like this, proabably wouldn't due to a mysterious "injury".
