I know this has been asked before but I cant find the thread. What are some good authentic Mexican food restaurants in Houston? Not Tex-Mex stuff.
Hmmm...do you need a passport to get into Mexico? Or not yet? I am actually in Pearland but any part of Houston is fine. If I had to select a preferred area it would either be Southwest somewhere around Galleria / Bellaire or the area which is near BW8 / Harwin / Westpark / I-10
all the best mexican food comes from those vans you see near construction sites. Truthfully, I've never eaten off those vans. I remember watching crazy/beautiful a few years back, and now I kinda want to eat off of one. I want to wash it down with some of this.
Mexico is a pretty good sized country, you know? They not only have different regional cuisines, they even have different levels of wealth within those regions.
Taqueria del Sol (Authentic) 8114 Park Place Blvd Houston TX 77017 713.644.0535 Had this for lunch today, been going there since I was little and nothing has changed. It's located on 45 S going towards Galveston. Great authentic Mexican food. Their dinner plates are 6.79. Today I got 3 enchiladas rice and beans for that price and it was damn delicious. Added bonus is the panaderia (Mexican bakery) located in the same restaurant. Always nice to take home some pan dulces and other sweets on your way out.
Pico's on Bellaire has great Mex-Mex and great Tex-Mex. I make it a point to go there at least once every time I go back to my beloved home town of Houston, Texas.
There is a taco truck outside of a car wash near Gessner and Westpark that has the best fajita tacos and salsa, especially at 2:00 am. I always hear the snickers and the gringo comments, but I can't stay away. They are like crack! And in that part of town, they may very well have some crack in them.
My favorite authentic mexican food place is 100% Taquito located at 59 and Weslayan. Don't let the name turn you off, it is authentic and very good. For instance, they don't even serve taquitos. I stumbled in there by accident looking for a breakfast taco one afternoon when hungover I highly recommend the tacos (3 small flour or corn tortillas with beef/chicken/pork and onions and cilantro). Beef is my favorite Also the quesadillas are amazing (not like regular quesadillas...mexican style...basically the tacos with cheese). The tortas are great as well as the sopas. You can't go wrong with any of them. The tres leches is really good too.
I just can't hang like I used to. Back in the day, I could drink enough to make their food taste good.
