I am looking for some Remote Desktop software that allows me to remote into another computer and allows the user at that computer to control it or allows me to control it. As you can see, for what I want Microsoft's Remote Desktop client will not work because if I remote into another computer the user will either be forced or asked to log off.

I saw some software like this at work called Dameware. The problem is, that it is not free and I was told it is on the expensive side. I don't mind spending money on such a software but I would like free software if it is out there or some that is not too expensive.

The reason that I am wanting this is so that I can remote into my sister's PC and help my nephew with is schoolwork. I believe it would be much easier to do it this way than talking directly over the phone. So, does anybody have any suggestions for the type of software I am looking for?

    Microsoft Remote Assistance will work.
You send user an offer to assist or the user can send you an invite and you can control the computer and both you and the user will be able to see the screen. Its built into Windows XP.

    You can also use VNC.
Its free. Just have to make sure that the user is not behind a firewall, otherwise some configuration will be required.

Honestly, MS's version of RDP is the best thing you will find. Based on your description, you can use it by having him send a request for remote assistance when he sits down to do his homework.

From extensive personal experience, RDP will easily be the least buggy option available to you.

VNC is great, if you don't mind screen refreshes limited to 5 times a second, and frequently loosing the position of the mouse pointer.

Look up Go2Assist or GoToAssist. There is also another program called "Proxy" that does this, but I forget the real name.

Yeah, let him get on MSN Messenger, have him send you a chat session, then you can allow him control of your desktop or you of his.

The reason you cited for wanting to do this does not seem like it is necessary to remote in to their computer.

Have you thought about trying Microsoft netmeeting?

I second this. Any of the VNC programs work great if...

    1. You are on the same network as the computer you want to remote in to

    and

    2. The computer you want to remote into has an IP address that is available on the internet. If the remote computer is on an inside network, more than likely, the VNC utilites will not work.

My company uses GoToMeeting (paid service) but LogMeIn is a similar free service.
