well... free from google's side anyway. standard txt msging rates apply with whoever your carrier is. vzw is mine, so 15 cents send/rec is their charge if you don't have some sort of txting plan. it's still better than the buck twenty-five or whatever they charge you these days for calling 411.

anyhow, type the number 46645 (which is "google" without the "e") into the number field on the txt msg. in the body of the email type in the city and business name. voila! you get a txt msg back with the business' address and phone number.

    examples:

txt "houston llive sports cafe" to 46645.

txt "77006 (actually your zipcode)" and "pizza" to 46645. you'll get the number to pizza joints in your area.

i haven't figured out how the movie search works though. i just put in my zip code and typed in "movie times" got back results for two of the closest theaters and the times for only "the brave one", "resident evil: extinction", and "good luck chuck".

also you may get back multiple txt msgs for only one search that you did. i got back seven from the movie search. i'm not sure how it is with other carriers, but i know that if the original msg was over the 160 character limit (this is vzw's character limit), it would send the rest of the msg in other txt msgs... each having the 160 character limit. with vzw it still costs only 15 cents since for one received msg because of character constraints. so it comes to 15 cents for seven txt msgs...again... unless your on some type of txt plan with your carrier that you pay a flat rate for.

again beats paying for the 411 thing. just learned this at work on friday and wasn't sure if posted, but i heard it's been out for some time now. if so, mods please lock and sorry for being behind the times (sjc can post the pic of the timeline with the "birth of black jesus" thing).

    another is 1-800-free411

is basically the same as 411, with advertisements, counts towards your mins, and its technically one of those automated ones, if they can't find it, you'll talk to a live person. If you want the number text to you, you can do that also, although there is like a min or 2 delay when I usually do it. It's pretty slick and free :)

when you text google, you can also get directions.

i.e. 14314 Congress Ave. Austin, TX to 413413 Benjamin Franklin Dr. 74717

And you'll be sent back text msg(s) with directions, just like you'd see on google maps

So, if you are on an unlimited texting plan, there's no charge?

    Sweet...

Yahoo's had this for a while. I use it a lot for finding services in a strange town.

This has been around for some time.

Also you can send it to "googl" or "google".

I didn't know about this until recently when I saw it on an iPhone. It has the google maps built in so you just type in the place you are looking for and a zip code and it drops a bunch of little pins on the map for locations. You're pretty much connecting to the actual site so no text mgs needed or anything. Pretty cool.

    I've been using 1-800-GOOG411

Its a really good free 411 service offered by Google, and free also.

Been using that thing for over a year, that and 1800free411.

Googles tends to suck, I'd have trouble finding some places.
