I ordered parts for my new system from newegg and I should be getting them early next week. Once I am done assembling the system, and installing the Win Xp pro (staying away from vista for now until they fix it), what other programs should I install for maintence?

I am looking for mostly free latest programs downloadable over the internet to combat virus, spyware, adware etc etc.

I am also looking for software which will insure that my PC remains fast and runs smoothly.

So what programs should I install along with my OS?

    Tips and suggestions welcome.

You can use AVG Free for antivirus
CCleaner for removing crap and temp files
    Spybot for spyware removal

Also test your new computer at http://www.pcpitstop.com
It can detect some config issues and give performance tips.

Well, a combination of Norton utilities, Mozilla Firefox and thunderbird, a program called XP Lite, which is a program you can get at litepc.com and a program called advanced system optimizer, are my favorites, but since you have to pay for them, I guess you aren't interested. But these are all great programs.

What you need for a good set of utilities is an anti virus program, a registry cleaner and optimizer (if you don't get one, your system will get bloated and run slow.), a way to get rid of IE for good (lite pc). These programs I have do the trick. I am not a fan of spyware programs, if you are not careful you'll install a decoy and put spyware on your computer anyway.
