As a frequent listener of sports radio in Philly, I can tell you that the hate for Wade is about 5X that for Billy King ... Charlie Manuel over Jim Leyland? Can't wait to see who Wade names the manager.
agree 100%, the Astros are gonna be bad for a long time. It really pisses me off because even with the poor farm system and huge holes on the 25 man roster we have pieces in place (in the primes of their career) that are good enough to carry a ballclub as long as those holes could be patched up. I'm worried that this might be just the start of a long run of bad baseball in this town. Let's hope the Texans are for real and the Rockets live up to their talent on paper. I hope your right Drayton.
Actually this is pretty strange to me. Ed Wade always had a reputation of not listening to anyone in the phillies organization and just doing his whole thing. I wonder how that will play out with Drayton's constant meddling. I always figured Drayton would hire some lackey who would let him intervene when he wants.
that means nothing (manager that is), Drayton has a history of not going after top flight managers due to wanting to keep that cost at a minimum. ie. first time manager Dierker-Collins or one's out of work with terrible track records, Williams and Garner
My main point was that Wade's decision to hire the perplexing Charlie Manuel over Leyland is yet another example of questionable decision making in addition to the other examples mentioned in this thread (Burrell, Bell).
Well maybe my memory sucks and in that case, #@&@#*$ I guess I might jump off the bandwagon for a little while.
And the beat goes on........Drayton,fall guys, and yes men. Gerry was the man and you knew when he left that the parade of guys like this would be on. Please sell our team.
see this just baffles me. please, God...let the beat go on. this franchise has seen a turnaround so dramatic that it doesn't resemble the one i grew up with that found itself in receivership. that was rarely very competitive. that was an after-thought on the local sports market. i think people who make comments like this must be about 10 years younger than i am. or have amnesia and can't remember how pitiful this franchise was before drayton.
While I usually agree with you on a good many things...Jesus...35,000 posts? Do you ever get work done? ...I disagree with you here. I lived through the receivership era too. If Wade has a bad reputation for making big signings that are a mistake and giving up too much in trades, then we would have been better off keeping Tim Purpura.
actually i'm billing you for my time here. it's all about clock management. i'm not saying the wade hire is good or bad. i'm saying that i think it's funny how people demonize drayton.
Wow, someone I never thought would ever get a GM job again.... As a long long time Phillies Phan (over 27 years), I wanted to extend my deepest regrets to the Astros organization on the hiring of Wade.
If there's one thing I learned this summer, it's that most casual baseball fans are completely clueless when it comes to how to run a team or how to evaluate those that do. So, for the most part, I could care less what Phillies fans think. That said, I'm definitely underwhelmed too. Agree that it seems like a Jimy-type hire -- going for mediocre results simply because he's "proven" instead of taking any kind of chance on someone with a higher potential reward.
That's who I thought they were going to hire, he was the other finalist and I didn't think the Astros were this dumb...but that's my fault. I honestly thought Wade was a courtesy interview because of his relationship with Tal Smith. I think this is a bad hire.
