Oh, OK, awesome, thanks jo mama! I'm going to be coming to visit family in Houston for Thanksgiving this year. I'm going to print off this entire thread and drive to Austin from Houston for a day and look around! I've only been there once for New Year's this year and was pretty impressed... Houston to me was an absolute concrete jungle, I really hope Austin doesn't end up like that as people are implying...
Oops, I meant "Hyde Park" when I typed the "Heights." I had a great studio apartment in Hyde Park for 400 / month, approximately 9 years ago. Clarksville would be nice -- it's close to Whole Foods, that big park on Lamar, and ACC Central.
How far North is Hyde Park from downtown? I can't seem to find it, what are the major roads that run through it? Congress? Lamar?
Let's see, downtown is 5-10 minutes from UT. To get to Hyde Park, from the UT Engineering area, go towards the Intramural Fields. It's the area w/ the numbered streets, e.g. West 32nd., West 14th. I lived two blocks from the post office.

You should check out this AMAZING suburb of Austin located approximately 2.5 hours West of the city. Its called Houston.
Hyde Park is a great area for students --You might also check UT's shuttle bus routes to help decide We're happy in the area between 45th & Koenig and Airport Blvd & MoPac (Loop 1) on the maps I have no idea what rents are like these days: back in my student days, you could still find a really nice 2 bedroom apt for around $115/mo--and we've been in this house long enough to have paid off the mortgage
great! free pool and one of the best bball courts in town (imo). sometimes its dead up there and other times there will be full court games w/ some pretty good dudes. when i lived in hyde park 5-7 years ago i played up there, but i wouldnt even try now! coffeeshop, grocery store and some good restaurants right at 43rd and duval. speedway has a good bike lane - you can ride to ut in 10-15 minutes. i lived right off 45th and duval. its a great neighborhood. the paramaters are probably north of 38th, east of guadalupe, south of 51st and west of red river.
My ex used to live there (Duval & Mopac) behind the Time Warner office and the cops were always in that place. I'd always thought the neighborhood behind it was better until one of my good friends said he had a gun pulled on him at the park in that neighborhood. To the original poster, North Austin all the way out past Round Rock, has definitely gone the way of the "concrete jungle". Not being into the bar/coffee shop scene and not being a UT student, I think the central part of town is overrated. It's fun to go to when I go out, but I personally wouldn't want to live there. South Austin or West Austin is the place to be if you're wanting to stay away from the "concrete jungle" feel of Houston. They are doing alot of commercial construction, but are making efforts to leave the nature feel intact as much as possible. They just opened a Little Woodrows down near Slaughter and I-35 and you'd never know it's there. And it's not too far a drive to downtown.
Thanks, when you say SW or West are you referring to anything West of Mopac? What areas in particular? West Lake? Travis Heights? Barton Springs? Zilker Park?
I'm talking mainly south/west of 360. The area is quiet, laid back and close enough to central/downtown Austin. I'm not opposed to North Austin, I just prefer South Austin and as a 32 year old who is over the downtown scene, I think central/downtown is overrated. I like West Austin too, but it is pricey, except for out near 2222/620 (which is growing alot lately), which is a BEAUTIFUL area, but a good drive to get anywhere. Do you know where you are going to school (which ACC campus) and where you'll be working?
yeah and get stuck in I-10 traffic for 1 hour (like i did last saturday) then go take the sam houston tollway and get stuck for another 30minutes! glad to be back in ATOWN!
