I've struggled with migraines over the past couple years, and more recently (past year or so) with horrible chronic sinus pain. Whenever I smell even a hint of cigarette smoke, perfume, or even lightly scented body lotion or deodorant, The area around my forehead and eyes begins to throb, and generic allergy/sinus medicine does little to help with the aggravation. I literally can't wear anything scented anymore because it hurts so much to smell it. I never used to have this problem, and I don't know why I suddenly do. Has anyone has any experience with sinus pain caused by smoke and scents? If so do you know of any prescription or other type of medication that helps stop the sinus pain before it happens, and would allow you to live normally and be around smokers/perfume wearers? I've googled this so many times and have tried to self-diagnose but it seems like I don't have the symptoms of most of the syndromes listed. Any input would be awesome!
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign But it's my destiny to be the king of pain sinus Pa-in sinus pa-in The Police...but your not old enough are to remember, right. Anyhoo, get thee to an allergist (hope your dad has good insurance) Probably you will just get a prescription for Nasonex. It is a cortical steroid that you spray in your nose twice a day that reduces the allergic reaction to allergy stimulants. The problem with Nasonex is that it has to get up in your nose to work and if your sinuses are too swollen it doesn't penetrate. So you either use a sinus rinse (distilled water and a salt compound from the drugstore that you shoot up your nose with a squeeze bottle...it's actually not too bad) or you use oral steroids like Prednisone most likely a Medrol Pack to reduce the swelling enough to get the Nasonex up there. The Prednisone will make you feel kinda speedy, hungry and you won't sleep real good for a few days, you'll actually feel a little artificially 'good'. They are just going to tell you to take Tylenol for the pain though they might give you some Hydrocodone if Tylenol alone isn't helping. You might need allergy testing, it's a little painful and expensive then you get on a series of allergy shots to desensitize your immune system to your allergens. The shots don't hurt but they itch a little..put cortisone cream on them immediately. Here's the kicker and why you need to go to the doctor (my sad tale). Allergic reactions in your sinuses can lead to polyp growths. Once you have polyps they can completely block your sinuses leading to constant, pounding , life changing headaches and the only treatment for them is out patient surgery with a full week of recovery required. You have to have cotton plug up both sides of your nose so that you have to breathe out of your mouth for 3 days. I've done it 3 times because allergic polyps recur. If you live close to Katy go see Dr. Sanober Tamboli at Allergy and Asthma Associates. 281-693-0084. She's great. For immediate relief go get some Psufedrine..they have to keep it behind the counter now because of the meth lab thing but if your 18, they will sell it to you with a drivers liscence. That stuff out on the shelf doesn't really have it anymore.
My sister had surgery for this about 5 years back. Not a comfortable procedure, but she hasn't had a migraine since.
I never get migranes from from scents and smoke but I get them once in awhile when I sleep wrong on the pillow and a nerve pinches in my shoulder/neck area and I wake up with a throbbing headache that gets so bad I have to throw up to ease the tension in my synus area. The best thing I've found is rubbing vicks all around your forehead (temples) and sinus area. Man, that relieves it so fast and amazingly takes the pain away. I almost never take medication, the vicks really works. Try it out once, you'll be hooked!
Thank you so much for all the help. Useful info and i'm going to buy me some Vicks and get myself to an allergist.
I use to get Migraines all the time when I was little. I would be out for like 2 weeks straight with crazy migraine headaches. Ever since I guy my lasik done, I haven't experienced it. Before hand, if I would get the feeling of a migraine coming, I would pop an Excedrin ( The best migraine medicine for me). Your situation is totally different from mine though. Good luck with it!!
I don't know if this is pertinent to your problem, but I have a friend who (along with his sister) have sinus trouble. They sweat by this saltwater treatment that you snort throughout your nasal cavity. It may be worth inquiring about.. at some healthfood store.
I have constant low-grade sinus trouble. My boyfriend, who's trained as a massage therapist, recommends the version of the salt-water treatment where you put certain salts into the bathtub and take a bath, submerging your head and turning it to let the water go up your nose. You're supposed to breathe through a short tube (like a cut off straw) in your mouth, if you can stand it that long. Anyway, it hurts like heck, but it clears things out for a few days. This is for flushing out the system... when it's congested, interfering with being able to sing, etc. For headaches, it helps me to "steam it out" by putting a hot washcloth on my face or taking a long hot bath. Also, Dayquil or its mood-altering variant Nyquil.
Sounds like you are allergic to something and the smells are aggravating the problem. I wouldn't trust anything over the counter for this. Have you ever fasted? I'm very serious in asking this question, but people sometimes do not realize that they are severely allergic to things and when they do, life is much easier. I would look at this very serious and at the very least, simplify your diet and focus on your enviroment. If you can fast, I think it's worth it. You could also try acupuncture, but I don't think the smells are the cause of the problems. This is always an informative website: http://www.doctoryourself.com/ I know I can be a bit sarcastic at times, but living healthy and happy are very big priorities in my life. Good luck fb
I had allergies, migraines, and severe sinus problems most of my life. I found out that all my problems were related to my diet. And the older I got, the worse it got. I eventually cut out ALL sugar from my diet and things improved. Then I eventually cut out the fast food, and all simple carbs & processed foods... anything that spikes insulin and I haven't had any allergy problems and no migraines since. I believe that most all of our health problems revolve around having a ****ty american diet.
i have some hydrocodene tylenol mix thing. i didnt take any. so y'all, i just want to let you guys know I feel a lot better today, somewhat. Not quite 100 percent, but much better.
