Bulls plan to build like the Bucks did

I found this interesting. There was a report earlier this week that Floyd wanted out, but wanted Krause to fire him instead of him resigning because termination would bring him the balance of his contracted money.

He's putting some heat on Krause and he's also risking his ire by letting loose some of what the secretive Krause wants for the future.

I'm torn. I think if both leave, it's just going to mean that some other GM will benefit from their foundation like Angelo is doing with the Bears.

Three good draft picks and a few years of patience.

That's what it took for Milwaukee to progress from a doormat to an NBA Finals contender. It's a formula coach Tim Floyd would like to see duplicated with the Bulls.

The Bucks chose Vin Baker with the No. 8 pick in 1993, Glenn Robinson No. 1 in '94 and Ray Allen No. 5 in '96. Baker was traded for Terrell Brandon, who was in turn swapped for point guard Sam Cassell.

After missing the playoffs every year from 1992-98, Milwaukee advanced all the way to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals last season and currently holds the best record in the East at 6-1.

The Bulls are hoping Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry and Jamal Crawford can become a similar winning nucleus, but it will obviously take a few years to find out.

Based on the Bucks' blueprint, there are more steps to becoming an NBA contender than simply drafting high. Not only Milwaukee, but also Philadelphia and Toronto have built their teams by surrounding some successful draft picks with veterans.

"I think what all three of those teams did is they were young and they got older, not necessarily by waiting on the sand to run out of the hourglass, they made moves to get older as they accumulated their talent base," Floyd said.

"I think at the appropriate times, we'll make those moves. I think it's been about re-establishing the talent base through the draft for us early. The more of that you have, the more options you have to make the kind of moves that they made."

"I think that's a real key to what we're going to have to do to improve," Floyd said. "I think it's been very difficult for teams to just start young and get better by waiting on guys to get a year older, because there's some losing that's taken place. By adding an infusion of guys with experience in winning at the appropriate time, it can help. I know those are things that (general manager) Jerry (Krause) has talked about."
