Even though he was beaten for the VIP tickets for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics, Yao Ming still generously committed to donate 250,000 RMB to make up the shortfall.

Yao is more traditional.Wu Da Wei,Yao's friend,emcee in the gala,who has said that:
That day his bar was full of client.He telephoned his partner that Yao would be coming and asked for two empty desks for Yao.As a result,Yao ran out immediately in a short while.Because Yao could not adapt the environment.

Steve Nash/Yao Ming Gala and Game Raise $2.5M

Its been a memorable last two days. I have had the incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with several of the biggest stars in the NBA. Bill Duffy and Bill Sanders of BDA Sports allowed me unlimited access to the players on the team bus, at the gala dinner, at the team practice, at the team meals and in the locker room before and after the game. I was able to get an amazing perspective that reminded me that there are truly some terrific human beings in the NBA. We often hear about the negative headlines in sports, but the past two days showed me that there are athletes using their platform to do good in the world.

Steve Nash and Yao Ming called upon their friends to help them raise money for Chinese children in need and their friends came running. From Carmelo Anthony to Baron Davis to Leandro Barbosa to the Chinese national team, these players and organizations came together to raise $2.5M from a dinner gala and a basketball game held tonight in Beijing. That money will go a long way here in China.

Team Yao defeated Team Nash 101-92 in a fun filled game seen by over 12,000 attendees and over 200 million television viewers on CCTV here in China. Chinese actor Jackie Chan even made an appearance to conduct the ceremonial toss at midcourt to start the game.

Paul Davis joined Steve Nash, Carmelo Anthony, Baron Davis and Leandro Barbosa in the Team Nash starting lineup. Team Yao featured Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets, Yi Jianlian of the Milwaukee Bucks and Sun Yue of the Los Angeles Lakers (who looked very impressive). In the 3rd quarter Steve Nash switched teams with Sun Yue much to the delight of the Chinese fans who loved watching the 2-time NBA MVP play with Yao, Yi and the rest of the Chinese National Team.

After getting stalled in traffic and arriving at the arena 15 minutes before tipoff, Team Nash was in good spirits in the locker room before the game and Steve Nash gave a heartfelt speech thanking his teammates for traveling a long distance to join him for this effort. Nash chartered a plane and flew the players playing for his team to China.

Yao Ming came in the locker room after tonight's charity game and thanked the NBA players who played in tonight's game. He spoke of how much the effort means to him and to the Chinese people and how impressed he was that these players flew halfway around the world just a few weeks prior to the start of training camp. He told the players in the locker room that if he could ever assist them with their charitable efforts, he'd be happy to do so. It was a really nice moment for these players who play in the most exclusive basketball fraternity on the planet - the NBA. Once Yao finished his speech, the Team Nash players sang a song that the game operations people played whenever Yao scored in tonight's game. Its a cheesy but catchy song that chants, "Yao Ming, Yao Ming, Yao Ming, Yao Ming........Yao Ming, Yao Ming". The Chinese fans love it though.

Speaking of which, watching tonight's game operations reminded me of attending an NBA game in the 1970's. The Chinese have a long way to go before they catch up to the U.S.'s sophisticated game presentation. Most of the soul/hip hop music that was played was circa 1980. The North Americans in attendance got a kick out of it though.

I'll have some video and pictures to add to this post later but right now I need to pack to catch my return flight back to Portland. Its been a great trip, but I look forward to seeing my wife and daughter and returning to the comforts of home.

Again, I must thank the people at BDA Sports as well as the NBA players who played in this game. They let me hang with them for the past two days and made me feel a part of their inner circle. Although I am a member of the media, I am still a sports fan at heart. To get to spend time with some of the players I have always watched from afar and to see that they are genuinely nice people without even the slightest hint of pretentiousness, was an experience I will never forget. If you've ever seen Cameron Crowe's movie "Almost Famous", I kind of felt like the young Rolling Stone writer over the past few days (ironically I watched the movie on the plane on the way over here so it is top of mind for me right now).

Nash/Yao Fundraising Dinner Raises $1M

Steve Nash and Yao Ming got their two-day charity event started in grand style tonight. The two NBA stars helped raise over $1M (U.S.) at a star-studded dinner in Beijing. Other NBA stars in attendance included Carmelo Anthony, Baron Davis, Leandro Barbosa, DJ Strawberry, Paul Davis, Alondo Tucker, Amir Johnson and Chuck Hayes. All of the players were introduced to the dinner attendees and they received a rousing reception from the Chinese attendees. The NBA stars will play a Chinese team that features Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian.

Ten of the top thirty most wealthy people in China attended the dinner that raised money for several Chinese Children's charities that include Chi Heng, a privately funded non-profit that works with children with AIDS; the Special Olympics and the China Youth Development Foundation.

I attended the event and sat at a table with Baron Davis and his agent Todd Ramasar, who is the President of Life Sports Management. We enjoyed dinner and good conversation. Davis is a super diverse guy whose business interests include a movie production company. I also had a long conversation with Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey who is here in Beijing to show his support for Yao Ming. It was my first opportunity to speak with Morey and I came away very impressed.

The event tonight featured a seven-course meal with plenty of entertainment. There were Chinese performers that ranged from violinists to a Chinese choir that sang American gospel (was my favorite performance of the night) to a Chinese country music trio (when they were introduced they were praised for having the "top selling ringtone song in China this year").

Then came the auction. All of the NBA players took the stage at one point or another during the auction to assist with the fundraising efforts. Baron Davis even did some basketball tricks in an effort to raise the price for his autographed jersey. The auction of the jerseys for both teams ended up selling for $42,000.00 (U.S.). All of the players posed for countless pictures with the Chinese dinner guests and even the service staff this evening. I didn't see a single autograph or picture request denied.

BDA Sports President Bill Duffy, BDA VP of Marketing Bill Sanders and Erik Zhang of BDA/Starz and Team Yao should be commended for organizing this effort. None of the three have slept in 48 hours and with the basketball game tomorrow, neither will sleep much tonight.

I had a chance to meet Steve Nash for the first time tonight on the bus ride back to the hotel following the dinner. If there is a more gracious, more socially responsible athlete in the world, I'm not sure who that person is. And Nash seemed truly in awe of tonight's reception by the Chinese people. Its his first trip to Beijing (he has only been to Hong Kong previously).

On Friday the NBA stars will scrimmage against the Chinese National team and then the two teams will meet for an exhibition game on Friday night. The NBA players practiced earlier today before spending the afternoon touring Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City......an experience that left most of the NBA stars in awe.

Once the game is over and everyone goes their separate ways, the Jordan Brand reps here in China are going to take Carmelo Anthony to tour a sports apparel factory. I think that's fantastic and wish that more athletes with sports apparel and shoe contracts took the time to visit the factories to see where the product is made when they visit China. Now if Melo is asked about the conditions at the factories he will be able to speak from an informed standpoint. He'll also get to see firsthand how the product is made, which I'm sure will be as educational for him as it was for me earlier this week.

I'll check in after the game and let you know how things turned out and what the final tally is for funds raised from this two-day event. I plan on attending practice tomorrow and hope to get some soundbytes from the players who have taken the time to come all the way to China for this effort.

I participated the California Fitness opening ceremony of Yao this midnoon in Beijing.That's great.
But It was a pity I didn't take my digital camera with me,I lost a chance to take a photo with Hayes.

I know that Yao, Nash, Barbosa and Chuck are. I am pretty sure that DJ Strawberry and Alando Tucker are.

What about the other ones? Does anyone know?

Mike Conley Senior, father of Mike Conley, is the agent for Greg Oden, and he worked for BDA Sports Management, Bill Duffy's company.

Yes, all of the players that came to China, except Baron Davis, are clients of BDA. Only 2 cannot be found on their current client list on their website: Baron Davis and Amir Johnson.
