I'm looking for something more complex than Notepad, but don't need an expensive WYSIWYG HTML editor. I don't do much with HTML, and therefore don't want to spend a lot of money (preferably, none). And since it seems that I'm always having to mess with the code anyway, I might as well code by hand to begin with. I'd like an editor with a tabbed interface, syntax highlighting, and (if possible) code completion for (X)HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

    One word: VIM.

(there's this other one that's supposedly a fork of the old Mozilla editor, called Nvu I believe. You might want to check it out too.)

There's also VIM for Windows at http://www.vim.org/download.php . It checks your HTML syntax based on stylesheets, and it's colorful. Your Linux distributions already have "Vi improved."

Notepad++ looks perfect. It has everything I need, and I like that it's open source.
